from a big fan of the sport - first my congrats to all those players selected as that certainly is an accomplishment - even if your position slipped for some reason

the best of luck to those who come to terms and begin their pro career as well as those who continue their amature careers for whatever reasons

secondly, and no less important my heartfelt support to those who were disappointed, especially those who had realistic expectations and were not selected - hopefuly it will serve as a focal point for motivation & not discouragement

one observation regarding some pretty good college jrs who either slipped or did not get drafted - it seemed to me that mlb had a thinking shift this yr that I hadn't noticed before, in that maybe recognizing that college baseball offers pretty good development and competion and if there were not pressing needs in their organizations these guys could just as well be back on the "shelf for a year" with their college teams. any thoughts?

finally, the dark side
area scouts on the phone with their player asking for a signing commitment, then making promises they had no authority to fulfill, and in fact did not fulfill - unfortunatly this is not all that isolated - it makes me cringe

the best response I heard was after the 4th call/promise in consecutive rounds was, with each offer being less -

"hey scout remember how you used to follow me to my car after games?

"uh, yes"

"well next time I see you I'm gonna follow you to your car!"

MLB teams feel that prospects develop better in the minors. Period. I also noticed the shift. I believe that it is because college seniors are out of options and easier to sign for very little money. I think that teams have realized that paying more for jrs only is worht it in the first couple of rounds for obvious talent and that with most players it is cheaper to leave them in school one more year. Rounds 10-20 are mostly used to fill organizational needs. There are exceptions of course. JMO
