Just read in the Chicago Tribune this morning that Illinois high school athletes will start being tested for drugs on a random basis in the coming year.

"The IHSA joined a growing number of states to implement mandatory random drug-testing. Its Board of Directors voted 10-0 to begin testing with the 2008-09 school year."

Ther are so many things wrong with consenting to government tests (school districts are governmental bodies) on your personal body that there is not space to debate it on this board. TX just passed a similar law through state legislation - random testing of athletes.

When citizens continue to consent to government initiatives that restrict civil liberties, government will continue to seek more liberties to restrict.

To politicians: Please spend my tax dollars and your legislative time on more productive issues (this includes US Congress, MLB, and steroids).

No they don't.

I was in the band at my high school, and I know that they should drug test. Maybe not steroids, but marijuana, alcohol, and such were used. I never did partake into the drugs. I did see what could happen.

Maybe because of my growing age I have become far less tolerant of drug use in general throughout society. My thought now is that if you are in any extra-cirricular school sonsored activity that may involve competition for scholarships and/or awards, athletic or academic, you should be subject to random testing of any illegal drug. If you want to compete, be prepared to "step-up" in all areas.
My son and several other football teammates were tested during football season. I agree with it. Before the season begins (football or baseball) the player and his parents sign a contract stating the player will not do drugs, drink alchohol, etc., along with plenty other rules and regulations about behavior at school and away from school. I agree with that also.

You appear to be unaware that the Illinois High School Association (IHSA) is a private organization. Membership is not a requirement of schools throughout the state. However, these schools (yes even the governmental institutions) have to obey the policies of the governing organization (in this case the IHSA) when it comes to activities and athletics that fall under the IHSA.

If you as a parent or an athlete do not want to be subject to drug testing, it's pretty simple-- DON'T PLAY. They aren't requiring EVERY student to be tested-- just athletes randomly.

They would be testing for more than steroids.

I haven't seen that anywhere, only the talk of PED's. Do you have a source for that?

No I said I had no problem with testing hs athletes but they should not be singled out and others such as band members should also be subject to random testing. I guess I should have said random DRUG testing
