A couple of weird plays over the years - both of which I thought of as interference - but in neither case was it called - Fed rules in both cases.
In the first instance, the dugouts protrude into the field with an fence perhaps 8 feet behind the front edge. Over throw at first, rolls up against the fence. Fielder runs over, picks up the ball, and turns to throw home - but there are players in the path of the throw. They have moved forward, no longer in the dugout but in front of it. Interference? - or only if the fielder throws and is unable to make a good throw. What if they were still in the dugout?
Second instance - Coach sitting on the bucket just outside the dugout - where he would call pitches when his team is in the field (but they are at bat now.). Foul pop up - 1B slide down the fence line, coach jumps back into the dugout but 1B stumbles over the bucket which remained on the field and fails to make the catch. Ball lands at base of fence. Interference? If the ball had hit the fence before landing on the ground would that matter?
In the first instance, the ump said that since the player didn't throw, no interference. Had he thrown at full speed (roughly 85) from 10 feet, someone might have gotten hurt - and there almost certainly would have been a fight.
In the second instance, the ball hit the fence about 3 feet up - ump said foul ball since the ball hit the fence rather than the ground. Thoughts?
