Duties in the dugout

I used to occassionly ask them as I went by questions.

what inning is it
What is the score
What number hitter is up
how many outs
what is the count.

I actually post duties before the game when I post the lineup so they know: who is on the book, who is on what chart, who is the bullpen catcher, who are my courtesy runners, who is chasing foul balls, who is warming up the near outfielder, etc. Everyone should have at least 1 job (you can have 4 or 5 guys alternating chasing foul balls).

Keeping the book

Keeping a QAB chart
Watching for signs

Those are just a few. Like JM said, post the duties just like the lineup. It makes it clear to them that they have a job to do.

Don't forget who's helping with runners going, pick moves, ball location on passed balls/blocked balls/pop ups for catcher, etc.

Excellent thought when it comes to retrieving foul balls! How many times are we yelling "someone on that" and no one moves?

Assign it so no one feels taken advantage of and then you know too who is accountable at that time. Excellent. Excellent.

Same for post game field raking. Good thoughts all.

I do foul balls by inning. Johnny has the first inning, Frank has the second inning, Bobby has the third inning and so on. It's posted on the wall next to the lineup and once that inning is over they are done getting foul balls that game. If I know there is a good chance of someone going into the game later I put them in the early innings to help keep things smooth.
