Hey guys,

Quick question...I guess the biggest trouble I've always had with scoring is proper crediting of earned or unearned runs...

Situation...runner on 2nd. Passed ball allows the runner to move to 3rd. Fly ball scores the runner on the sac fly...is the run earned or unearned, since the passed ball allowed the setup for the run that would not have scored otherwise during the inning.

Is a passed ball even scored an error?

Thanks for the input.

Passed ball is not scored as an error. But it can contribute to a run being unearned.

In the scenario you've posted, whether the run is earned or unearned depends on what the batters did after the sac fly was hit.

If, after the sac fly, the next batter doubled, then the run is earned, because R3 would have scored even without the passed ball.

If, after the sac fly, the next batter makes the last out of the inning, then the run was unearned (even though the passed ball isn't scored as an error).

OBR 10.16: "In determining earned runs, the official scorer shall reconstruct the inning without the errors ... and passed balls, ... in determining which bases would have been reached by runners had there been errorless play."

Hope that helps.
Yes in my opinion this is an earned run. Wild Pitches, while not an error, are the pitcher's responsibility and contribute to earned runs. Unlike the first question, Passed balls are also not errors, but not the pitcher's fault, so the runs are considered unearned, unless, as RPD stated, they would have scored on hits by batters that followed the PB
