monkeyboy, would he consider a one piece bat? If so the one-piece S3XL would be a good choice. $199.00 for it.
My son had the S1 composite 2-piece and it broke half way through district at the hinge, was replaced but sold it after using a teammates S3 alloy. He bought the new S4 alloy, its barrel is 2 1/2" rather than the S3 2 5/8". Durability I would say its compared to the Omaha, old Cat5, Marucci Team series but with the same pop as the 5150.

Hope it helps.
From what I've experienced, composites provide good performance and feel but questionable durability. It doesn't seem to matter the manufacturer. Easton, Louisville Slugger, Demarini. I've seen them all break in half within 6 months of purchase because a ball is hit on the bat's neck. My son has a Kelley Vision. Alloy. We bought that for his summer ball. He likes it alot but he likes the H.S. booster club purchased Easton even better, however that one broke in half after 1 month. Easton replaced it.

I understand the premise, but I have to ask after seeing this posted by you and others several times. Does this mean you have no problem with rolled, shaved, or corked bats?

I believe Funneldrill is referring that it does not matter which brand of bat ie(wand) you have its the player ie(magician). A talented hitter can do it regardless of bat performance. Bottom line its TALENT!

True enough and as I stated, I understand that premise. However, an altered bat can make a less talented player look great, especially when looking at power numbers.

And back to the OP, I think it was a question of quality, not necessarily "pop.". If it has nothing to do with the wand then all would use the same bat.

Back to monkeyboy's original question.
His son is a power hitter and would the Easton XL1 series bat, which is a full composite with a longer barrel made for power hitters in mind.
His second was regarding durability, life expectancy of this bat for the $$$.

It is common knowledge that some Easton 2-piece BBCOR bats have been known to break at the hinge point. So durability issue would rank it low, but hitting performance of the bat has been ranked very high by most players.

I offered to him that if his son might try the one piece alloy XL S3. It is much more durable, performs well and is about half of the cost of the S1.

True, any altered bat can provide a player an added advantage, but that is for a very short time or until caught and coaches/scouts will see that come out down the pipeline.
Clemson,

As far as pop goes, I prefer the Rawlings 5150. Their walls are slightly more thick than the rest of the bats, but they don't have the rings inside that prevent the trampoline effect from increasing. Now, having said that, if you watched my 3 hole hitter swing it and my 9 hole hitter swing it, there would be a huge difference. In fact, my 3 hole hitter can still out hit my 9 hole hitter using a cracked wood bat. I can put an altered bat in my 9 hole hitters hands and he'd still be a 9 hole hitter. That's what I mean when I refer to the magician.

My 21 month old grandson can hit...period. I've never showed him how to hold the bat or how to swing. He's been to practice, games, and sits in front of the TV and watches/observes. He picks up the bat, swings it, and hits the ball. Why? Because he can. I don't think every kid can be taught how to hit. Not everyone is blessed with the skill of hand/eye coordination.

I just think too much thought is put into what bat to use.
My son is a 2014 16 year old 6'3"ish 180...high average hitter but also hits for power...really not sure what he would actually be classified as(power hitter vs contact vs ?) so i picked the XL1 for him...he has said he prefers the Easton...not sure his rational possibly teammates or acquaintances are swinging it. Fairly certain he is only interested in the additional "pop" and not any possible durability issues.
