Eligibility/Redshirt/Roster question

If a student athlete is not listed on the roster of his D1 college baseball team, is it possible for him to be redshirted(I thought redshirts counted towards roster)? I saw a discussion on another site where a poster thinks a certain kid is redshirted due to academics, and is not listed on the roster. Also, if the player IS ineligible due to academics, can he gain a redshirt if he becomes eligible next year?

As far as I know if you are redshirted you still are on the roster, not necessarily the active one. Redshirting does not eliminate you from the team.

If you are academically ineligible, you are not on the roster as far as I am aware. If he is NOT on the team this year, he may or may not be eligible for a redshirt, depending on the coach. I am not sure too many coaches hand out redshirts because one failed to make the grades. In fact, if I was a coach, no matter how good the player, if you failed to do the job in the classroom, not sure I am going to give you another opportunity to try in the field, not with a max roster.
