Eastern Michigan University baseball coach Roger Coryell violated two clauses of his contract when he used his university e-mail account to send a series of inappropriate messages, according to a disciplinary letter sent to Coryell by athletic director Derrick Gragg.

The letter and e-mails exchanged between Coryell and the mother of one of his players were obtained from the university by The News on Wednesday through a Freedom of Information Act request.

According to Gragg's letter, Coryell broke the terms of his contract by "violating the rights of a student-athlete" while also engaging in an act of misconduct, both of which, according to his contract, are fireable offenses.

"All of us involved recognize the seriousness of the situation," Gragg said Wednesday afternoon.

"When you've been in this business as long as I have, you learn to take it one day at a time. There are all types of situations that can arise at any time and you have to deal with them professionally and accurately. More than anything, we want to do what's best for the university, the athletic department and the student-athletes."

Coryell, who received a 5.9 percent salary increase over the summer, is set to earn $61,670 this year. He was placed on unpaid administrative leave for 30 days on Oct. 1 for what the university deemed inappropriate use of the school's e-mail system, a violation of university policy, according to the letter sent by Gragg.
