2014 baseball season is over...had a lot of ups along with a couple downs.  Overall, 2018 did ok...last night as we drove home from his last tournament, we started to plan the month of November leading up to winter baseball training start date of 1 Dec.  He just turned 14 late June and is almost 5'11 and 145, so he is asking mother nature to allow him to hit 6' by spring and maybe add about 10-15 pounds ...his 60 time is sitting about 7.4 - 7.6, so he will work legs and sprints throughout the winter to try and get that down a bit...a 7.1-7.3 should be more than attainable by HS ball.  Velocity wise he is cruising about 69-70 and tops 73...he hasn't pitched much at all this year, but is hoping to change that in spring...a good velocity increase to top 76 and cruise 72-73 looks within reach.  In addition to winter workouts twice a week starting in Dec, I will get him an instructor for both batting and pitching (3 or 4 lessons a piece) to round out the training.  His primary goal is to make JV as a frosh next spring.

What other offseason goals are out there?

I'm not crazy about his primary goal. He should want to be an impact player on JV, not just make the team.

Good sized kid. Does he play basketball?  It's a great off-season activity for a HS baseball player, helps develop quickness, focus and competitiveness, and is lots of fun.  If not, I'd for look for workouts that build  both core strength and agility.

Lessons are good  but I'd also have the kid hit once or twice a week to help keep his swing mechanics solid.

Correct, an impact/starter would be his goal...not just making the team.  He's going to do indoor track to help with his sprinting and speed...he will have 2 1/2 hours of baseball practice every week from Dec to Feb...then HS ball will pick up...

Are these his goals or your goals?  I see a lot of "I" statements that you wrote.  I agree with not liking the goal but I don't even like "Impact Player on JV" goal.  Focus more on what will get you to be an Impact player is that is you wish.  Choose something Offensive, Defensive, Pitching that will allow you to realize this.

i.e.

1.  I will learn to properly hit the ball to the right side.

2.  I will improve my backhand play at SS

3.  I will improve my percentage on first pitch strikes

He is going to tryout for indoor track during the winter at his HS...he hasn't really been interested in anything else...did a year of basketball, was not interested in playing football...I actually had to talk him into track as he didn't even want to do that.

IEBSBL...the only "I" in the statements is about getting the instructor...as "I" unfortunately have to flip the bill for it.

Above are the 3 different statements you made.  You are 100% correct, only in the Hitting Coach statement did you use the word I.  However if you look at the 2 statements previous they appear to be your goals.  Look, I am not knocking you.  I am just making sure this is the horse driving the cart and not the cart driving the horse.

Understand your thoughts as it would seem like that, but not the case at all...son pulled me to the gym today, immediately after work and then made me sit out in the cold while he ran sprints...yep, i'm just along for the ride...he's definitely driving.
