DLock,
That's what we did when son flew back from Ft. Myers a couple of years ago. He's a catcher and was going on to a workout at his eventual college. At that time he didn't have any trouble with his spikes. Her checked all the rest of his gear. We were sweating bullets until it came around on the luggage carousel! The luggage gods were smiling on us that day, though, and we grabbed his gear and were on the way to the next event! Good times and great memories.
Never hurts to do a little research before a baseball trip. Get the address of several nearby sporting good stores--you never know when he'll need that eye black or batting gloves to replace the ones he left at home (despite your annoying reminders). Besides, kids nowadays love to buy baseball equipment and accessories even if they don't need 'em!

You didn't say what type of aircraft you are flying on and if you have a connection...two important things to consider regarding what you carry on and what you check. The over head carry on spots can be pretty cramped on the smaller planes and the airline might check your bag at the gate anyway. So keep the glove and cleats with your carry on and check the rest.
When we travel to Australia, China, Japan, I strongly recommend that the players carry only the glove, extra shirt and pants in the "carry on", absolutely no spikes or bats.

Airport Security labels the bat and spikes as weapons and our group of 130 persons cannot be detained. You maybe different in domestic, please check w/ your USA security office.
