I'll have to set this one up.

Batter hits a hard grounder to third that bounces right at the edge of the grass and towards the fielder's glove. The ball hits the fielder's glove and hits the ground and rolls 1 to 2 feet to his right. He runs and picks up the ball and throws to first where the runner beats out the throw by a step. Would this be considered a hit or an error?

This happened in a game last night and I scored it a hit and someone disagreed. I scored it a hit because the ball was hit hard on the ground and the fielder's only chance of getting it was to knock it down and grab it and throw. The guy disagreeing with me said that he caught it and dropped it. If he had dropped it, it wouldn't have went in the direction it did it would have fell in front of him instead of going to the right. He defintently knocked it down.

Official Scorer makes the call. If that was you, it's a hit because that's the way you saw it.

It's hard for us to make a call without seeing it happen. It could have been a THTHandle shot, in which case I'd give the hitter the benefit. Just because the fielder got a glove on it doesn't make it an error. Bad Hops are just that...not the fault of the fielder.

If you have to justify your decision to that guy, you'll have to justify all your decisions to everybody. Stick to your decision, explain it if you want, but don't let anyone talk you into questioning yourself.
