The more I search the hsbaseballweb forums about this, the more I confuse myself.  Bat speed, ball speed, off the tee, off pitcher... So here is what I am specifically wondering about: the statistic which Headfirst measures -- exit velocity off the tee.  That is the speed of the ball coming off the bat, correct?  And what is a "good" number for this among high school aged players?  The spectrum of what a D3 vs D1 type player might get?

Thanks for any input or clarification.

This is one measurement I am not sure there is a whole ton of difference D3 to D1. While yes there are outliers. Some kid with a 110 is probably not D3 and there might be a slick fielder somewhere in D3 sitting at 72. But generally I think you need to be in that 85 - 100 range. The difference then comes down to how often do you square it up?  That is what will determine D3 - D1

Throw 90+, Hit 90+, better chance of getting 90+ % of a Scholarship

100/100/100% is obvious

The lower you get into 80's, the lower the prospect is, usually, unless there are other outliers (running a 6.5 60 helps!)

I would submit though it is a whole lot easier to get an exit velo of 90 than 90 off the mound. And 90 off the mound virtually guarantees you a spot. They will work with you if your control is off or your off speed is bad. A 90mph exit velo is kind of no big deal if you can't square up.

I found this posit entertaining and I wish your calculus were true 3and2.  I would have had lower tuition payments this year! I honestly do not think you can correlate velo, batspeed, or foot speed to scholarship amounts or your chances of garnering those amounts. But I do think you are correct that those figures definitely correlate to playing ball at a high level in college, all other things being equal.

yes, that was thrown out there a little too haphazardly however the emphasis was intended to be on the word "better".   Better chance.

Probably should have been more like:  100mph exit velo/90+ throwing
