Does anyone else have experiences w/ Triple Crown Sports baseball tournaments? This past weekend we took our U12 to Grand Prairie to play in one. What a rip-off. $450 for tournament, $100 gate fee and teams get to provide the balls. Some decent to good umpires, some that didn't know the basic rules of baseball (I mean young coach pitch, t-ball level umpires). Teams were informed 2 days before tournament that pool games would determine the 16 that would play in the real tournament on Sunday while the others played in a conciliation tournament that determined 17th place. Determining factors not 'clearly' explained. Tournament was supposed to be for "D2" level teams, but USSSA major level teams in it. Bracket play not posted until 3:30AM on Sunday. Needless to say, it stunk. We've been playing Super Series and USSSA. I know these organization are all there for the $$$, but this was ridicules.

Boy, this brings back some old memories. I don't miss it a bit. I remember when my son was 12 we played in a tourney down around the Leander area. Pool play at 8am saturday morning and played two games that day. We ended up having to play at 12:30AM Sunday morning, in the rain, to start bracket play. Our umpire, along with a couple of our moms, was drunk. We went on to win that game and had to play at 9AM. We lost the 9AM game and had to drive back to Dallas.
Texan, Your comments are true EXCEPT where Triple Crown is concerned. I have had my teams play in many TC tournies and had our team in that 12U TC tourney in GP. They manage all aspects of their tournaments regarding bracketing, posting seedings, etc. The hosting site generally provides umpires and a figure head tournament director.
Our 13u team played in the same tournament at the Texas Star. My only complaint is the web site states that the have "NEW" mounds. Totally false. And the dirt mound we played on was never prepped during the day. There were no fieled crews working the fields during the day. Our first game on Sunday was to start at Noon. The first game went nine innings and the second game had several delays due to rule questions. Thus our start time was delayed to 1:45. No one's fault but I think they could have posted the time change on the web site so teams did not show up two hours early. The cost with the gate fee is high but that's triple crown and we chose to pay it. I hope the Omaha Triple Crown tournament this year will be a little better run as it cost a little more to play in it. $995 Frown
My son's 14U team played in the tournament too. 14U 60/90 division. Two games at Oak Grove Park in Grapevine on Saturday morning (too cold) and then four games at Texas Star on Sunday. All in all I thought it was a good tournament with quality competition. Fields we nice and in good shape. Umpires fair, for the most part. My only complaint is that they have the results wrong on the web site! The Dallas Panthers Elite played the Dallas Patriots for the finals. The Panthers won 13 - 9. Somehow the web site lists the Patriots in fourth place???
We, too, played in this tourney. The brackets were messed up but, fortunately, we were not affected and I felt sorry for all of the teams that were. Our chief complaint was that our "reward" for getting a #2 seed was an 8AM Sunday game. We arrived at the park at 7:15AM Sunday, and left the park at 11:30PM after the championship game. I know it's a little selfish, but it seems that they could reward the top 4 or 5 seeds with an opportunity to sleep in a little.
Our team played in the 14U division as well. I will say this about TC. I think that as the kids get older, the umpiring gets better. That's not a knock on umps, just that you tend to get more seasoned umps as the boys move up in age. In the past few years, the umpires have not been very good in TC. This year, I thought the umps were very good (except for the ump that didn't throw the kid out of the game for purposly going inside the baseline at 1st and slamming into our first baseman).
Pardon me for dropping into the Texas forum for a minute. Triple Crown is franchised and I have found the quality varies from place to place. Gate fees are also a local choice. There were no gate fees when we went to Steamboat and Omaha. My son played in Steamboat the year of the Clemens incident but I never even knew Clemens was there until we got back home. Didn't see any teenage umpires either but my son played in a different age bracket. In Omaha last year he played against the Coppell Cowboys in 13u. Very defensive game ended 1-0 in 8 innings for the Cowboys. When we were in Steamboat as 11u he played against Stars Baseball twice (Stars took second that year) We split 2 games with them but they were the team that eliminated us. By the way my experience when he has played against Texas teams has been nothing but very positive. Real nice people down there from what I've seen.
