Runner at first. Pitcher throws an inside pitch, you hear the ball hit something ( you assume it's the batter), the catcher doesn't catch the ball but knocks it down, and the first base runner moves to second. The umpire stops the batter who made a couple of steps towards first base and says it didn't hit him. The batter shows the umpire where it grazed him on his forearm but the umpire takes his continues to say it didn't hit him. After the coach made his arguement all four umpires met and the call remained the same.

Here is where I have my question. After the umpires made there decision, the home plate umpire pointed for the batter to go back to bat and pointed for the runner on second to go back to first.

If it wasn't a dead ball why does the runner have to go back to first?

This was a huge play because the next pitch was wild and would have moved the runner to third in a one run ball game. The batter ended up striking out. We did have one fly ball that would have scored the runner and tied the game. But instead, we had a runner at first with one out instead of a runner at third with one out.

I talked to Ringer1 son yesterday and he said the umpire did say it was a foul tip. I don't think the umpire honestly knew or not. He just didn't seem confident enough in the call. Oh well, we live on.

Just so you know, it would have to had been a foul ball. The catcher didn't catch the pitch, so it's a foul. A foul tip is caught by the catcher and the ball is live.
