With the seasons overlapping, basketball and baseball, are coaches able to give the basketballers adequate evaluations? With the majority of the teams filled by the time the basketballers come on board would the coach be able give the late-coming athletes a fair evaluation given he already has the majority of his team formed. Or do most understand ahead of time what athletes are coming out of other sports and how they may fit into the "big picture"?

Real world application here...my son is a freshman on the basketball team. Our seasons overlap as stated above. There is a semi chance he could make JV as a freshman but my concern is that the teams may already be set and any incoming players will go to their natural grade level.

Definately not end of world for my son to make freshman team but I do think some of his abilities suggest higher level than freshman ball. I guess the biggest concern is that the incoming basketballers are given a fair evaluation and placed accordingly.

Thoughts?

I can say, with no ego involved, that he will make the baseball team...its just a matter of if he will be considered at all for anything beyond the Freshman team since he will be coming in late. His skillset suggests that he has the physical tools and mostof the mental tools required that would allow him to play beyond Freshman. Again, not hellbent on him playing up but if he has the skills to make the team better as well as himself then Why not?

Might be mountain out of molehill stuff but I guess since high school ball is unchartered territory and because supposedly high school is what all the select ball has been working up to I guess there is a semi-pucker factor that maybe my little future MLB hall of famer might not be given an adequate look given the basketball situation. :-)

I trust our baseball coaches, would it really matter if I didnt :-), but I will say they only know my son in passing so any borderline calls may not give him the benefit of the doubt.

I mean really...how can he be on the Rangers 2015 starting rotation if he is not considered for JV as a freshman?

Good times.
At my kids school (north of the DFW airport), it is hard to make the team under any circumstances. The competition is stiff and they even have cuts for fall ball. Unfortunately about 20-30 good ballplayers will be cut. Chances are, if the basketball players did not attend camps, or play in the fall, the coach will not know enough about them to keep them in the program.

Like I stated earlier, likely mountain out of molehill stuff. My son will definately make the baseball team...just a matter of which one. I wont loose any sleep. I guess its just a fathers desire to ensure his sons talents are recognized\appreciated. Such egomaniacs we all are!!! Actually that, and the sincere desire for junior to get playing time and also be challenged. I am respectful, very much, that there are only a limited number of roster spots and that just making it is feat regardless of JV, Varsity,...

More than anything I guess I just want to know there is a fair process that will evaluate the late comers and then place them accordingly.
