This happened yesterday in son's college game.

Pitcher throws a pitch high and tight. The batter ducks, but leaves the bat up. The ball strikes the bat and rebounds into fair territory in front of home plate. The ball landed in fair territory. The catcher retrieves the ball (in fair territory) and throws to first.

The umpire called it a foul ball. The coach for the team in the field questioned the call, asserting that the ball was a fair ball and the runner should be out.

This ended up being a crucial play, as the batter doubled on the next pitch and eventually scored the winning run in an extra-inning game.

What's the correct call?

Everyone I talked with about the play said the ball touched bat and then fair territory, nothing else. However, it was an unusual play. I've seen the bat make contact with the ball while a batter ducks, but this is the first time I've seen the ball land in fair territory. From my team's standpoint, it's unfortunate that the call had a direct bearing on the outcome of the game. But that's baseball!
Actually Raiders, I think its you who is totally wrong here....

yes, the umpring community is a small one, and we do talk about players, games, coaches and attitudes amongst one another....But the vast majority of us who have been umpiring for a long time would never take a parents attitude out on a player....

Look, I've been on this side for 20 years, and I've had players who thought the reason they didnt get a hit was because of my zone, pitchers who lost games think it was because of one ball/strike call, coaches who win because of the team and coaching, but lose only because of the umpires.....None of that matters to me when the next game rolls around. Baseball is a passionate game, we long term umpires know that. Sometimes things get said, or comments are made out of the heat of the moment.....If your going to be in this game, you need to be able to perform above that level.....

The only thing an umpire has is personal ethics... I dont expect you to agree with all of my calls, but I do expect you to know that I am fair.....and you, as the player, have to know that no matter what today you have a clean slate and a fair opportunity...

Umpires who do what you say are cheaters........I dont work with cheaters....

Am I saying that there are no umpires like that?...no of course not. There are bad umpires just like there are bad cops and bad doctors......But dont paint us with that broad brush....

To Tiger Paw Moms point....when I was a first umpiring, I thought the umpiring at PONY level must be better....then the Colt level, then HS then legion....then college......but sometimes in non-professional baseball, it isnt the best umpire who gets assigned its just the most available umpire......and that is bad for all of us......
Everybody complains about the umpires some say they decide the games on calls but that is the nature of the game. Once during my coaching tenure one of my payers was whining about how the umpire had cost us on a couple of calls. I told him the umpire did not boot 2 balls as he was playing ss. I recall one was the third out of the inning. 3 runs scored after that.
