Question has probably been asked plenty of times, but I'm new to forum, so please bear with me. Hard ground ball hits outside (foul line) near corner of third base, then caroms foul. Umpire signals fair ball; runs score on hit. Defensive team objects, but umpire sticks with call. Is it fair or foul?
I think it's probably foul (even though our team was batting and thus the beneficiary of the call.) Rule is ball has to go past the bag in fair territory to be judged fair. This ball appeared to carom into foul territory off the near outside corner of the bag, before it completely passed the bag. I imagine that if the ball is in the air as it passes the bag, and passes into foul territory between the near and far outside corners, the umpire is probably going to rule it fair, as it's hard to tell in such a short distance where it actually went into foul territory. But this ball hit the corner of the bag closer to home plate and immediately went into foul territory, so I think it's probably foul, even though the call went our way.
Opinions?
