I am curious how much you pay for your sons to pay fall baseball through the high school program?

At Osbourn Park we have to pay $450 plus $30 for hat and shirt for the fall season. The cost was $450 for the summer season as well. I know it is really expensive but if we want our boys to play we have to pay it. Last year it was $600 for the summer and $600 for the fall. If you played both seasons, you were given a "free" entry into a winter camp. They had so many turn out this fall we now have 2 teams for the jv. So for $450 my jv son gets to play in about 7 games, 10 practices and 2 intersquad scrimmages with instruction from the staff.
Other schools in our area a lot cheaper.

Hylton-$75 for 16 games
Woodbridge- $50 for 11 games
Forest Park- $175 for 26 games

Bottom line is that baseball outside of the spring HS season (although now many counties are charging participation fees) has become almost exclusively a pay-to-play endeavor.

This may seem like a lot of money but the question is where is it going? Id imagine there are league fees, umpire fees, game balls that need to be purchased, and salaries for the coaches as well. Im sure that Colangelo is being compensated and don't see anything wrong with that.

I guess I can understand your frustration because other schools in your area are charging less for fall programs, but I am going to add here that I don't think you've done anyone much of a service here by calling out the coaches at Osbourn Park or Colangelo by name over this.

If you were really just seeking "advice", then there would be no need to even name the HS where your son plays. You couldve posed your question to the folks on this board without all the names.

Your motives seem more geared towards calling out your sons high school coaches and casting them in a negative light. Not what hsbaseballweb is for in my opinion.

Good call VAbaseballfan...most people have zero idea what is costs to run a team for a season. And this not the forum to call out individuals...I doubt it would take much for the coaches to figure out which dad posted this.

After watching my son's school struggle to put together a fall ball program the past few years with the guys who aren't playing football or band or travel ball, it's pretty impressive that OP can field two JV squads with a real coach and reliable access to a field that doesn't have field hockey nets on it. Even a lot of larger schools in the area struggle to field a single team and have to coax a reluctant dad to run it. A lot of folks would trade places. Count your blessings!

Why not talk to the coaches and not hide behind a name? If you have concerns take it up with them. I am a admin for the jackets baseball summer program. We work with many parents and even offer payment plans.Did you attend the parent meeting on Wednesday night? If you did you would know we are looking for more games but teams in our area are folding there fall programs as they dont have enough to field one team. In which case we are losing games on our schedule. We are still looking foir more games but there are not a lot of teams to choose from local. We would like to offer you a refund as we dont want unhappy people. so Please contact me and we will issue u a refund no questions asked.please email me @ opjvbb@aol.com to discuss futher.

Thanks

The amount you have noted for other schools is in-line with what I recall we paid for high school fall leagues.

However, the scenario you describe is different than most High School programs.

You have professional coaches (professional meaning paid) who have played, in some cases, at a very high level. In my opinion that does not automatically equate to good coaching and I'll add I'm not stating that to be the case with Colangelo, I don't know them from Adam.......

We were very fortunate, my son played one fall season, his freshman year, with the Fall school team and we had some OUTSTANDING dads, with college level experience, who volunteered to coach and did so with extreme passion. I'll repeat we were fortunate and I will NEVER forget those dads....

I know this will stir it up and maybe I'm wrong, but I don't think it's a bad thing to name a school or the programs in place or the costs associated with the programs.... Why is naming the cost perceived as negative, unless you believe the costs are excessive..... This might be perfect for some, Swampboy finds it to be a blessing that the school would take these initiavtives, others might as well.... While others might have the same feelings as the initial poster, it's not worth the money... Hoss has shared the schools position - talk to someone and they'll work with you...

There's obviously interest in this format, two JV teams plus Varsity for the fall to me equates to interest.....

The Virginia Cardinals were FREE last year, nothing wrong with posting that... By the way I have great respect for those involved with the Cardinals - folks who would take the steps to allow kids to play for free - WOW that is admirable...

The sad part of the post to me is the quotes that "you have to pay".... You have alternatives -- find another team and or talk to the coaches...

Hoss are you serious? This was addressed late last spring with the Admin at OP. Plenty are bothered by the cost compared to other schools. 45 players at 450/480 is a lot of cash. Somebodys doing pretty well of this. Tell us, is OP getting its share? I sure hope so. Payment plan isnt the point, it is too expensive. Should be pretty clear why I am hiding behind a screen name.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Fall Baseball isn't sanctioned or required by High Schools as a school sport. They are privately run programs that have the permission of the schools to play on their fields and that's all. With that being said and if it is true, then you are just at the mercy of what the local private organizations that are running the league, all of the program's politics and policies. Granted there may be some pressure from the schools or coaches "that it would be beneficial to play", but that again is local politics.

It is a shame that some take advantage of providing and helping local kids in the game they love.
Then call up the person you have issues with and deal with them face to face. If you think someone is doing something unethical then go directly to the source and deal with it. But coming on a message board and throwing out accusations like that is total bs.

On top of that you do it with an anonymous screen name at the same time calling out someone's credibility. Total BS. Take it somewhere else.
Good thing this isn't the Northern Region....you'd stir up a lot of other issues...we have the 1/3 roster rule - no more than 1/3 of the roster can come from the school, for any high school coach (head or assistant, varsity or jv) to deal with when it comes to coaching any summer or fall teams.

Northwest and the rest of the state are lucky.
