I'm relatively new to this site (long time lurker), but I've learned a great deal reading the many informative posts from members with knowledge to share . My son is a 2011 and has received some initial interest (questionnaires) from a number of D-1 schools, the majority on the west coast. I realize that we're just beginning the process and this is a long journey. My son has had a few coaches email him their phone number (obviously they can't call him yet) and discuss his goals, grades, etc...

It's hard to gauge at this stage how much "real" interest there is at this point, as I said, I know it's a long journey! My question is for those that have gone through this...and, for those of you that are going through it with your kids now. What is more important during the Fall? Showcases or Fall Tournaments? He has currently committed to two college showcases (schools he has interest in), and more than likely, one more in December. He will be competing in the Arizona Fall Classic in a few weeks, and a few local tournaments over the next couple of months.

I would like to have the next few months planned out (budget purposes), so any advice would be greatly appreciated! If it helps, my son has participated in a couple PG showcases already with ratings of (8.5). He plays the OF, has above avg speed (sub 7), a good arm, and decent pop in his bat. As far as school goes, his grades are OK, could be better (3.4 gpa), and he'll be taking the SAT in December.

Thanks, I'm looking forward to hearing from those of you currently on this journey, and those of you that have already been on this ride!

bsbl247,

The fact that coaches have emailed your son their phone numbers sounds like genuine interest from those coaches. Questionnaires in the mail can be less specific (mail out 500 and end up being interested in following 5 or 10 of those players), but the invitation to call sounds serious.

It sounds like you are doing a good mix of events. If your son has DI potential, it's a good idea to do a Perfect Game event a couple of times per year, so that they can document his progress for the DI coaches and pro scouts.

Good luck!

Julie
Thanks Julie, I appreciate the response. I re-read my post today, and agree with you completely. My wife and I was discussing the money we've spent on our son's baseball journey at the dinner table last night (just the two of us!). We realized (joked)that we could have some additional savings in his college account with all the tournaments, showcases, etc... that we've shelled $$$ out on. And probably could have pre-paid a year at some schools already?

Like all parents, we just want to do the right thing for our kids. I'm sure it's all going to work out in the long run! Wink

Sounds like you've planned out the right events, but what we invested in was a real good conditioning program. Our son is a pitcher, so we focused on that - building up core strength and working on technique. That was far more valuable than playing Fall Ball and paid big dividends down the line.

I think kids get tired, and parents can run out of money. Get a good baseball trainer and go to work. Having a great Junior year and summer is the key to recruiting.

Based on what you have described, I doubt your son will have difficulty finding an opportunity (as long as he stays healthy and continues to progress). You just have to find it and then figure out if it is the right one. It is possible and maybe even probable that because he is an outfielder it will take longer.
brod,

We have him in a workout program right now, a mixture of weights & plyometrics, only time will tell how it all works out? Thanks for the advice regarding Fall Ball, and Yes...Parents can definitely begin running out of money!

jemaz,

Thanks, hopefully my kid stays healthy and continues to progress on the field and classroom! I guess it might be too late to change him from an OF to a middle infielder though!? Smile
