After watching two seasons of travel ball with son I have noticed a trend that I am having some trouble with. My son pitches well- has a good + fastball, a + curveball, and a ++ changeup. The coaches he has realize this and so most of his pitches are offspeed pitches because there are not a lot of good offspeed pitchers at this age (13-14). As a logical consequence, most of the hits my son gives up are off of the offspeed pitches because he "hung" it, "missed his spot", etc.

It has got me to thinking though that I believe he loses his deception with his + stuff because for one thing- it is easier to hit an offspeed pitch if you are sitting on it. If my son continues to pitch this way I feel that his + stuff will not continue to be + stuff. I feel that he should throw the fastball way more than the offspeed and just use the offspeed as a reminder to batters not to sit back and wait on it. A fastball never loses its deception- it is always fast and requires better timing to hit which is more stressful on the batter. Then if you occasionally mix in an offspeed pitch, the batter becomes even more stressed because he hasn't seen it enough to pick up on the deception.

I guess what i am saying is that it seems like coaches play chicken with good batters by giving them too many offspeed pitches rather than challenge them with the hardest pitch to hit in baseball- the fastball, and then wonder why they hit the offspeed pitch.

Whats a better strategy with good hitters- more offspeed or less considering that all of pitchers pitches are equal?

Reasonable question/post........

Let me say this first....Please use common sense......

From my observation of posts that occur on this great website, people make this game MUCH MUCH harder than it is......And it is very difficult to play at the highest levels to begin with......

IMO putting a grade on a pitch is just bragging.....Plus FB means he throws 93-94 on the MLB scale....what does that mean for a 13-14 yr old......Plus CB means he throws it 78-83 w/ depth....Plus Plus CH means he throws it 12-15 mph less than his FB WITH DECEPTION and hopefully he can sink it.......IMO you are using comparisons that don't fit the bill..........They can't or he wouldn't be having the problem he is having.

I'm sorry I'm venting about verbage used by some that IMO don't know alot of what they speak of, which makes answering questions that much more difficult........

And don't take this the wrong way.....
If I were you I would have stayed away from grading your sons stuff and simply ask ....

"How may I go about convincing my son's coach to teach pitchers to pitch to contact? My son's coach want's him to throw alot of off-speed pitches and create swings and misses and in doing so he is not using his FB as much as I feel he should and is becoming predictable."

Speak to him with respect and voice your concerns with logic. If you go about it the right way he will not be able to dispute it and he will buy into what you think would be best.....

Don't know if I answered that very well but I hope I helped some.....
I can only speak from my experience coaching and having a son who pitches...

At age 13-14 a 'really good' fastball works well. at 14, my son had a 75+ mph fast ball. He would often just mow batters down in the early innings.

It was usually around the third inning he would start mixing in off speed pitches. He'd either throw a cutter or a curve to change it up. He had great success with this strategy.

When he moved up to JV and Varsity, at 15 his fastball was 80mph. He found that he couldn't blow it by the hitters anymore and found that placement was very successful for him. He discovered that throwing it down the middle (no matter what speed) was far more dangerous at this level. The batters he was now facing were simply bigger, faster, and stronger.

He started working batters and really trying to hit corners. He also realized he didn't have to try to throw a strike every pitch.

I think one of the prior posters made a great point about keeping it simple..

Ironically the times where he has struggled is the times where his coaches have tried to get him to change his normal routine.

Let him throw what he wants and have fun...
