I just returned from Wenatchee, Washington. I drove my son there (20 hours) a couple days after his Finals to join his summer collegiate wood bat team, the Wenatchee AppleSox. We met up with the Sox in Klamath Falls, Oregon. Fortunately it was on the way to Wenatchee, so it worked out well. It seems like the further I get away from Southern California, the friendlier people become. It's amazing how nice people were in Klamath Falls, and for the five days I spent in Wenatchee.

As many of you know, the players stay with Host Families when they're away for the summer. My son is in a very unique situation. He and another player on the Sox are being hosted by the Bonaventure Senior Retirement Home. They each have their own one bedroom apartment, and several grandparents to help cheer them on for the summer in the building. I stayed in his apartment for the five days of my visit, and I can honestly say he's going to be well taken care of.

As for baseball, I was able to catch five games in six days and witnessed some pretty good ball. The Sox have a talented roster with kids from the Pac 12 (UCLA, WSU, UW, OSU), Big West (UCI, Cal Poly, Hawaii), WCC (USD, USF, & Gonzaga), and other conferences throughout the west...probably why they call it the West Coast League. Wink I hung out with a fellow Big West parent from Northern California. His son attends Cal Poly SLO. I'm happy he was out there with his kid getting him settled...good guy.

My son utilized his red-shirt season this year, so he hadn't pitched against anyone besides his own teammates since last summer. He made his debut against Cowlitz on Saturday Night. He had a 1-2-3 inning, two F7's and a 6-3 groundout. A nice quick outing that required an adult beverage. I thought I'd relax during Sunday's game, but the starting pitcher (justbaseball son's college teammate) took a line drive off his ankle early on and my son was brought in. He pitched another 1 1/3 inning, with two K's and a BB.

Tuesday was their day off. I hung out with my son and helped him with errands throughout the day that required Dad's wallet. Later that night he dropped me off at the Wenatchee Airport and I arrived home in So Cal late Tuesday night. I'm going to miss him, but I can listen to the games on the internet and follow the gametracker.

I was listening to Wednesday night's game hoping that he'd get an AB or two. He's been taking BP before the games, so we'll see what happens? He didn't hit tonight, but he was brought in from the pen again and pitched an inning. He gave up his first WCL hit, but he struck out three. Listening on the internet and not watching Live is very stressful. My son is doing well thus far, however, I know there's plenty more ball to be played and he'll have his ups and downs. I'm hoping that my stress level gets better soon...Our Radio Guy needs to improve on calling the pitches on the broadcast, because it drives me crazy not knowing what he's throwing! crazy

I spent my 21st wedding anniversary and Father's Day on the road during this trip. I missed my wife and daughter, but I had a great time with my son.

Best of luck to all the young men playing for their respective collegiate summer teams, I wish you all the best. And if any parents have advice on how to deal with Radio/Internet Stress...I'm all Ears!

I have it a little better as the league my son is playing in, the NECBL, has many of the games available streaming, as well as a free radio feed. Unfortunately his home games have not been available yet, but that problem is supposed to be taken care of soon.

A little bit different situation for me, with his home field being 6 hours away this summer, while in the spring it is 12 miles door to door. I know you are in a similar situation, it does take a bit getting used to. Wink

I did rent a condo for a week later in the year and the bonus is the team is located in a lake community in NH.

Glad to hear your son is back pitching competitively and soon to be hitting too!

My son played his first 3 summers in local summer collegiate league's that were easily attended by his family, friends, and whatever g/f he had at the time. lol. It was always good to be able to watch him play in some games during the summer. However, being in the RIGHT summer league makes a world of difference. Not many, but some games were attended on occasion by local Scouts. Most were only in attendance at the All Star games, or Scout Day.

The summer team and league he plays in now was well worth the sacrifice of not being able to watch games. Great talent. Super Coaches. Competitive teams. Fun teammates. And the free internet broadcasts make it much more bearable! Our announcers are talented like crazy! You don't just hear the calls of what the pitch was but the action going on in the batters box, in the field, what the umpires are doing, what the play in the field is, etc etc etc. It's almost like Im there!

I was listening the other night as our team was playing away. There was a bad call from the Ump at homeplate and the crowd boo'd loud. The broadcaster said something to the effect "And all the Umpires who paid to get in tonite's game is disagreeing with the call!" I laughed hard. Never heard that quip before! Ahhhh...summer baseball!

Lots of games left for the summer!
Birdman14- You're spoiled all the way around when it comes to watching your son play. I'd take that 6 hour drive for the summer schedule . Big Grin Thanks for the kind words, it's nice to have KD out on the field again. BTW, one of my son's college teammates is playing in the NECBL for the Holyoke BlueSox.

YoungGunDad- I really enjoyed the Family atmosphere at the games I attended. It reminded me of a minor league ballpark with all the festivities in between each inning, and the mascot etc...In fact, many of the residents in the town my son is playing for seem to mistake these kids as professional athletes getting paid, some don't realize that these are college kids out on the field.

I read last night that PerfectGame's Allan Simpson has the Wenatchee AppleSox ranked #6 in the Summer Collegiate Baseball rankings as of 6/20/12...obviously it's still early in the season with plenty of baseball to go.

We're going up as a family on July 1st and staying the week to watch all the baseball we can get in! Being here in Atlanta in this dire heat and seeing that they are having the same weather in Virginia things should be copesetic.

I cant wait to see the crowds that come out to the games. My son said its insane the number of fans that turn out. And the players get treated like Professional players. He loves it. Great atmosphere.

Just wondering if I should bring my own grits for breakfast!

6 hours vs. 20 hours, your right, I am spoiled. I am making the 3 1/2 hour drive and back tomorrow to see him play in North Adams. And the Holyoke drive is actually the closest for me. I will be sure to look for your son's teammate then. Its this little thing called work that keeps getting in my way. I'll probably get to about 10 games in total, so that won't be so bad.

Lots of time to talk on that long trip. That's the thing I miss most. He took the car up by himself this time around.

YoungGunDad- I've heard that some of the ballparks draw SEC like crowds of 5,000 or more. If I'm not mistaken, The Madison Mallards pull in pretty big crowds for the Northwoods League. It has to be exciting for the players not used to playing in front of that many fans.

birdman14- Enjoy the Ten games you have to watch T.S play this summer. Hopefully they're utilizing him as a 2-way!?
Hey - your son is in Walla Walla playing my son!!!

We just got back from a week on the road to see team play in Klamath Falls & at home in Walla Walla WA. What fun we had. This is our last summer watching college summer ball so it's bittersweet. Walla Walla is a beautiful town, son is living with a great host family and having tons of fun.

The umps were a little tough on your team the other night. Apparently the team supports one of your players by howling when he's @ the plate. Considering his last name is Howell that seems appropriate to me- the umps didn't think so and tossed one of your players. They were a little sensitive IMO.

Anyway, college summer ball is a blast for these kids and they are so fortunate to have this venue.

Good luck to your son the rest of the season.
CaBB,

Unfortunately my son went down with an arm injury the third week out in Wenatchee. It was initially diagnosed by their Trainer as a sprained UCL and he stayed out there and attempted to rehab with PT three to four times a week. Anyways, it turned out to be more than a sprain, so he's back home. I hope that your son has enjoyed his summer? KD has a couple college teammates on the Walla-Walla squad and they've enjoyed their time this summer in Washington...the people are very friendly out there.
I'm so sorry to hear about your son's arm. Hopefully it is getting better? I guess it's better to have an injury during summer ball and hope he'll be good to go in the fall.

My son hasn't been there all summer as he was still kind of rehabbing from an injury. He is having a blast. He's very impressed with the team- great coaches, great management team, great fan support in a beautiful stadium. The town of Walla Walla is beautiful, especially if you like wine. The team is not doing as well as last summer but that's baseball!
