Perhaps it's just from listening to them so much, but I like the Braves crew; Pete Van Wieren, Skip & Chip Caray, Don Sutton & Joe Simpson. I like Van Wieren & Sutton the best.

These are the best guys.During post season I turn down the t.v and listen to them on the radio! Its alittle weird hearing chip this season. But he's pretty good.I like Don as well, but Skip is my fav because he doesnt hold back!Joe Morgan is good but as an Atlanta fan tim can take a dive.Dave Justice isnt too bad and ron gant isnt that bad
I have to agree that we're lucky to have Jon Miller, Duane Kuiper and Mike Krukow here in Nothern CA. They're excellent. I also have enjoyed Vin Scully a lot, as well as Jack Buck.

Perhaps best of all was growing up listening to Lon Simmons and Russ Hodges.

I'm not a fan of McCarver, Morgan or Sutcliffe. There are many broadcasters out there who are ok, but not great and they help us appreciate the truly good ones.
I don't usually stay up late enough to see the Padres play. Dick Enberg does their games. I've enjoyed him over the years.

Tonight Charlie Sheen threw out the first pitch. Enberg noted Sheen "co-starred" in the great baseball movie, Major League.

"Of course, Bob Uecker was the star of the film."

The Padres are playing the Reds and Homer Bailey gave up a first-inning home run.

" Mr. Bailey, what's your first name? HOMER!!!!"

Classy, knowledgeable, excellant game analysis, we lost a Great One in Jack Buck. As was just mentioned about Scully during Gibson's homer, after McGwire broke the HR record, Jack simply said, "Pardon me while I stand and applaud", or his "Go crazy, folks, go crazy" for Ozzie's hr against the Dodgers. Everyone got to see a bit of Our Jack during his introduction to the first televised game after 9/11.

I don't think the 'homer' thing is at all necessary, particularly with radio announcers. If I want to, I can just to sit next to another fan during the game broadcast and make excuses --- I like a bit more information and objectivity from a pro. And things like Ron Santos' groaning and whining during games really makes me crazy!

Baseball fans listen on the radio when they can't see the game live or on TV. Casual fans don't. I think the good radio announcers recognize their audience.

The Cards have got Wayne Hagin and Mike Shannon and I do enjoy them --- Shannon's a character, comes out with some bizarre phrases (just in case we're still missing Harry....I have a list, even), but certainly makes the game colorful. He and Wayne are also honest about the team's strengths and weaknesses...and will let you know as quickly when we got the advantage of a bad call as when we got hosed.

The TV guys aren't in the same class as the radio announcers. Odd, as their job should be easier. Perhaps it's the face-man ego-thing that won't allow them to shut up and let the action speak for itself when appropriate. (Why, for example, do they EVER show the announcers?)

Orlando, nice post! I love listening to Shannon and Hagin does a great job. I miss Jack Buck. What a great guy. I had the opportunity to talk to him on several occasions and he was always approachable. I seldom listen to the TV for Cardinal broadcast. I'd rather go out and sit on my back deck and listen to Mike. He cracks me up with some of the stuff he says. BTW, he lives about 5 minutes from me. I go back to the days of Harry Carey doing St. Louis Baseball and so, I've had it pretty good when it comes to listening to games.

Well, I'd have to say who my least favorite guy is: Rex Hudler. He is really annoying to listen to and gets caught up in himself almost every telecast. Why we pushed Frank White out of the broadcasting booth here in KC astounds me. He was very good. Denny Matthews on Royals radio is also very good to listen to.

Paul Splittorff was a local legend in the booth until his passing.

Notice the KC bias?
I may be accused of being a homer, but I love Scott Franzke and Larry Andersen doing radio for the Phillies. Great mix of baseball knowledge, praise, criticism, and humor. And the two have great chemistry together. I don’t think of myself as a homer, because I don’t care for most of the other Philadelphia sportscasters. I also listen to quite a few games on XM Radio, so I think I can make a fair comparison.

On the negative side, Bob Carpenter and JP Santangelo for the Nationals are two of the worst ever on tv. Whole web-sites are devoted to lambasting them. Santangelo wasn’t terrible when he started, but Carpenter infected him. Every comment from these two is either adulation for doing something routine, or a lame excuse for something that went wrong. They blame everything under the sun for all Nats mistakes (stadium, weather, umpires, cheating, etc.). The sad part is, I actually enjoy watching this rival club, but the homer announcers make it intolerable.
