As a coach, I often come on this thread just to try to learn things by reading some of the discussions. I'd like to get a clarification as to the rules.

I often see references to "FED"...am I correct in assuming this is the same as NFHS rules? Obviously, OBR rules are different; are they essentially Major League Rule? Is it just a matter of different states as to what rules are used or do you often find school teams using FED rules, but summer teams using something different?

Here in Ohio, the OHSSA uses NFHS for all of our high school baseball games. I believe, though, that a lot of our kids who play summer ball can play in a league (ACME) where the NFHS is used, but other play in leagues where something akin to Major League rules are used. Confuses the heck out of me.

Welcome to our world. As umpires we move from rule set to rule set and try to keep it all straight. Fed is indeed high school rules. Every state follows them except two. Thhe problem rises when the states are given the option to follow them as closely or loosely as they wish.
An example:
South Carolina I believe, has never instituted the appeal process and still uses the umpire calls missed bases with no appeal. There are varying interps of the going to the mouth rule.
OBR is Official Baseball Rules which is what pros use. It is the basis for many youth league rules. LL,Pony,Dixie,BR/CR,USSSA and others use OBR as the base and add age appropriate rules to each system.
NCAA is the third major rule set but that is college only.
When your son plays different rule sets it can be confusing. If you have a particular question feel free to ask.
