I thought the rule was that a girl/guy could only try out for the opposite genders team if there was no corresponding sport available to them.

If there is no girls football team then she can go out for football. That is why there are girl wrestlers and guy field hockey players.

Thats what I thought too. I think that is the way it should be.

In our conference there is a female wrestler. She is good - I think, cause I don't know how hard the guys really try against her. I always feel bad for the guy who wrestles her, they are in a no win situation. Win- so what you beat a girl - lose- a girl beat you haha
Now there is also a girl on a travel team my son plays against. She is good-but the talk is always are her parents doing her justice in a baseball league when in HS she will have many opportunities in Softball - which she may have to learn some(I don't know are the rules different-I am a Mom that never played)

I'm a Mom with a son and a daughter I don't like the thought of girls on the boys team and I really don't like boys on the girls teams. JMHO

This is a topic dear to me. I am one of those rare female baseball players. Smile I played baseball with the guys up to the age of eighteen. I stopped playing against them cause U just couldnt get around on a fastball faster than 85mph with a wood bat and hit for power with consistency. *sniff sniff*

But up to that time I absolutely had a blast playing with them. They never mistreated me or went easy on me on the field.

I still play baseball on occasion with guys my age. I am 25 still cant hit pitches harder than 85 consistently. Frown

I think a girl that wants to play on a baseball team really needs the moral support of the coach and her teammates. Until there are more opportunities for a girl to play baseball with her own gender. I like playing with both genders.

Recently played with some guys in my hood, they were suprised at my fielding abilities and throwing the ball into the infield from right field. Smile I was on cloud nine for the rest of the day! They invited me to come back and play with them whenever they get together on the weekends.

I'd better dust off my louisville slugger for next season! Got wood, will travel! Smile

Ummmmmmmmmmmmm,...pardon moi, but I don't think so.

I have a daughter who wants to play baseball, NOT softball.
Why are there no girls baseball teams? If there are no baseball teams for girls,..then I say may the best athlete win a spot on the baseball roster.

If a boy wants to play softball, dont see why he shouldnt be allowed to. If boys want to start a all male softball league,..I say go for it.

There are girls s****r teams, swim teams, tennis teams, wrestling teams, basketball teams, golf teams, volleyball teams, la cross, ( need to take a breath ) track teams, rifle, cross country, field hockey, gymnastics, water polo, canoe teams, surf team,...you name it, they have it.

But no baseball team,...I scream NO FAIR!!!!!

I think there should be girls baseball teams/leagues.
My daughter will be first in line to sign up!..and if there are no leagues,....watch out dudes,...I have a 5'9 13 year old, who can bat like a mad dog, run like the wind,..and isnt afraid of getting her ponytail ribbon dirty. Wink

Hmnn. Seems like a double standard here doesnt it? You say let the girl play on the boys baseball team but, if a boy wants to play softball let him start up an all male team? Why not just tell the girl to start an all girl team? Or let the boy play on the girls team? Shouldnt here be some consistency in approach if you are going to demand access?
Here's my two cents on the topic. If a girl is good enough to try out for a guys team and make it, that's awesome and she should be more than allowed to do it.

However, I do not believe that guys should be allowed to go join a female team due to the fact that for the most part, men are physically stronger than women. It would not be fair to the women that want to play sports in high school to have to compete against a men unless they decide they want to. If all the sports were co-ed then eventually we would have teams with 95% men on them, regardless of the sport.

Should men be allowed to compete in the women's division in track? I would think the answer would be an obvious no. However, if there were a dominant female track star that never lost and had times as good as the men's, I personally would have ZERO problem with her lining up against them.
When I was a high school frosh I really wanted to play s****r. Unfortunately there was only a boy's team. So I talked to the coach. He told me he would have no problem taking me on the team if I could keep up with the guys. Unfortunately my dad refused to sign the consent form. He was afraid that I was going to get hurt.

I found this pretty darned amusing from my dad's perspective considering the fact he had full knowledge that I played full contact hockey with guys at the time too!
What if a some boys wanted to play softball in HS? Would anyone here have a problem with them being able to try out as long as the girls were able to try out for baseball?

I personally would have no problem with girls trying out for our baseball team. But I would then feel it was only fair for boys to be able to try out for the softball team if they wanted to.
Further discussion about whether or not Boys can play on Girl's teams. Seems that was is good for the goose is not necessarily good for the gander

IV. WHEN SHOULD BOYS BE ALLOWED TO TRY OUT FOR GIRLS’ TEAMS?

POSITION: Boys should be allowed to play on a girls' team when there is no team for boys offered in that sport, boys are underrepresented with regard to total athletic opportunities and the strength and skill levels of the boys are comparable.

(1) Boys cannot participate on girls' teams when there is no team offered for boys in the sport if girls are underrepresented in the sports program.

Because sports participation opportunities for girls have been historically limited and when sports participation opportunities for girls continue to be limited at a school, girls can try out for boys' teams even if there are girls' teams in the same sport. Title IX articulates this right in non-contact sports, and this position has been upheld in 14th Amendment and Equal Rights Amendment cases for contact and non-contact sports.16 Since the opportunities for boys have not been historically limited, and boys are typically overrepresented in athletic departments, boys do not have these same rights. While some courts in Equal Rights Amendment states have found that such a position violates the individual rights of boys,17 other courts in ERA states18 and federal courts supporting 14th Amendment protections have found that protecting the participation rights of girls as a previously discriminated against "class" outweigh the rights of an "individual" boy to play on a girls’ team.(19)

(19)Clark v. Arizona Interscholastic Association, 695 F. 2d 1126 (Ariz. 1982), (excluding males from participating on the female volleyball team did not violate Equal Protection rights of the male students because it was a substantially related method of achieving the important objectives of promoting sport opportunities for females and redressing past discrimination.) Mularadelis v. Haldane Central School Board, 74 A.D. 2d 248 (N.Y. App. Div. 1980), (the exclusion of male from female sports team upheld. The court evaluated the male petitioner’s exclusion in the context of all sport opportunities available to students, instead of just opportunities in the particular sport and found the petitioner’s exclusion justified because males in general still had more opportunities than females in the institution’s sports program.) you seem to have concluded that men & women are different!? and ...

if a situation benefits a girl allow it

if a situation benefits a guy don't allow it

hmm, I believe I know where you're coming from, but I'll have to think on that one Confused

JustMe,
Not a double standard at all. Perhaps I did not make my posting clear, or perhaps you did not read it correctly.
I said

My meaning: A boy who wants to tryout to play for the girls softball team SHOULD be allowed to, and a boy who wants to start an all male softball league should go for it. I am saying YES to both. Not one or the other.

Let me try again:

My #1 wish: An all girls baseball team/league.

My #2 wish: If no all girls teams/league available, than a chance for my daughter to tryout to play on the boys team.
( She just wants to play.)

My #3 wish: An all boys softball team/league.
( for those boys who have the desire. )

my #4 wish: If there are no all-boys softball teams/leagues available, than a chance for any boy to tryout to play on the girls team.

No double standard.

I am asking ( not demanding ) for consistancy where there is none and I find it ironic that access is not already available, simply because of gender.

Footnote:
Baseball and softball are two completely different sports.
You can not pass one sport off for the other.

My bad if I misunderstood. I think we are in agreement, but Im not actually all that sure about my position lol. I think that any individual should be allowed to "play up" if capable so Im for the girl playing baseball. Not really comfortable with "playing down" but also not convinced that is necessarily whats happening in going baseball to fastpitch softball. So Im confused I guess. Smile

play baseball...earlier, you were referring to the girl in TN. She plays at Christian Brothers University in Memphis. True, she is not a big contributor, but has been a part of the team since she was a freshman. She is entering her senior year now.

Infidel_08-The Silver Bullets were a very solid team coached by Joe and Phil Niekro. They were actually together in the mid 90's as I had the opportunity to compete against them. I was playing for a Stan Musial team in Memphis at the time. I remember one of our guys (thank goodness it wasn't me) struck out 3 times during the game.
