I was a fan of Fernando Valenzuela early on. Living in Northern Virginia, I never saw much of him, though.
In Spring 1993, I took a new position with my employer in Tuscon. TMM_Mom and the kids wouldn't be able to join me until late July. I was able to take a company-paid trip back east in the interim.
After hearing that spring about Fernando signing a minor league contract with the Orioles, I immediately made plans to return the weekend that the Rochester Redwings (O's AAA team) would be playing in Richmond. TMM_Mom was ok with it and we would meet her parents, who lived in Williamsburg, and enjoy a game.
TMM was only 3, but I was hoping he would be able to see a legendary pitcher. Fortunately, the baseball gods liked the idea, and Fernando's schedule coincided with my plans.
From time to time I would mention to my son how we got to see one of the greatest pitchers. Fast forward to late 2016, and TMM is playing winter ball in Hermosillo, Mexico. Following the team as best as a single language speaker can, I learned that Fernando's son was playing on an opposing team. I again reminded TMM of that afternoon in Richmond and sent a photo I took that day.
During Christmas break I opened a gift from my son to find an autographed ball from Fernando. I was stunned.
