Field dimensions

The question arose today as to why second base is measured to the middle of the bag from home plate whereas first and third are measured to the back of the bags. Until now, I never really gave it much thought but, from a geometric standpoint, this doesn't make sense...anyone?

I dunno' Harold. I've tried five times to get on the bag. I don't think I can even get to the back. We'll just have to mark it there in the center...a foot or two ahead of the right side tire.

I suppose we better get started clearing out the brush in the outfield.
