For years we've been blessed with an older gentleman that would maintain our field. He's retired and instead of playing golf, or what-not, he loved coming to the field every day and work on it. Of course we let him while the coaches still chipped in on post game/practice drags and game prep.

He's now getting up there in age a little bit and can't get around like he used to. To that end, we're going to install a system where it's the players' responsibility to recover and maintain the field, as it should be. We're going to let the older gentleman over see the process - he's more than earned it.

My question for you is, what systems/responsibility assignments do you guys incorporate with your players and how do you organize it? I've seen several schools where everyone has a job and they get after it. It's very impressive.

The list of things we're planning to do looks something like:
Drag the field, broom the grass/lip perimeter of the inf/of, rake the perimeter of the dirt, sweep/clean the dugouts, mound and home circle, water the inf, drag, maintain the outside of the field.

We'd like to keep it within 10-15 mins so we can do it after every game and or practice with out fail. Thanks for your help!

Assuming they are at least old enough to handle the duties. 13 years old and up and taught the proper way to handle rebuilding the mounds etc. Here is what we did in the past and seemed to get done fairly quickly.

Daily Routine before Practice:
Mow as needed-- Adult
Remove tarps-- All players
Water skinned areas and baselines- if done Adult so as not to over water
Install the bases-- Infield players as they take position after dragging
Erect safety screens for pitcher, first base and second base-- The position player at that station
Place the batting cage at home plate-- Catchers

Daily Routine after Practice and Games:
Remove the bases and cover the base anchor sleeves--Players at that position
Drag the skinned areas and baselines-- with broom by 1st and 3rd players
Rake loose dirt off grass along base paths-- 1st and third, mound circle- Starting pitchers, and infield edge- MIF
Rebuild the mound and home plate area and cover areas with tarps--Starting pitchers and Catchers
Rebuild the bull pen mound and home plate area- -Relief Pitchers and Catchers
Replace and tamp any loose divots in turf areas-- All Outfielders
Dispose of trash in and around field and bleacher areas-- All players as the last thing before leaving the field

Day of Game Routine:
Remove tarps--All Players except Starting Battery
Mow the grass--Adult if needed
Scarify the skinned areas with a spiker--Adult
Drag the skinned areas smooth--Adult
Water the infield area and mound (rebuild mound / batter box as needed)--Adult
Sweep and clean dugouts--Non Starters
Set the chalk lines and mark officially – mark on fair side of stringer--Adult volenteer
Paint or wash bases, pitching plate and home plate-- Non starter infielders
Prepare the bullpens-- Non starters
Check the operation of the field lights--Adults
Check the operation of the scoreboard--Adults
Prepare the press box and operation of the public address system--Adults
Check the operation of the electrical equipment in the concession stand--Adults
Clean and prepare the locker rooms and umpire rooms-- Locker rooms are all players every time they are there. Adult for umpire area

Dispose of trash found in and around field and bleacher areas--All players every time

We change our field duties weekly. They are listed on the bottom of our practice schedule every day. Practice schedules are posted in the locker room and in the dugout.

Along with some of those listed, we also assign other duties such as who is responsible for ice/water on road trips, med. bag ('cause the trainer does not always make the trip), etc
