We just got an email from a college coach (who seems interested in our 07). He asked us to fill out a Expected FAmily Contribution Calculator (EFC) based on 40,000 tuition. Coach says he needs this to figure out what the financial aid office can work out. We've not had any discussions with this coach about whether or not our son even wants to come to this school. It's in his top 5 or 6 choices..but we've had no formal conversation. I'm not sure I should send this back. Anybody else fill one of these out recently?? And any tips on filling it out?

Some other random thoughts:

- You'll be doing it now based on 2005 income.

- You'll probably have to do it again in February after you get your taxes done.

- When you do it this time you'll get a PIN #. Don't lose it as you can go back and either modify the first one you did or need it for the second run at it. I'm pretty sure they're good forever (the PIN)

- I think there are some unofficial (but accurate) EFC calculators on the web. I think I recall seeing some but the FinAid.org is the official one that the colleges use.

- Not to be sarcastic but do you even know what EFC is and how it pertains to the various scholarships (academic/athletic)? We had no clue when we went through it all this past February but there are some threads around here that discuss it in some detail.

- Ask the coach if you need to do the FinAid.org EFC calculator or if any of them are suitable. The reason I ask is because he's simply trying to find out what your "needs" are (LOL) and a calculator from some other website may be suitable where as the FinAid.org calculator is "official" and would be reported to whatever schools you select during the process (up to 6 I believe).
