Just checking out the Class L standings some interesting thoughts.

Central and Kevin Veilleux are sitting in the 16 spot right now.

If the season ended today BG would not be in the playoffs...

Its possible that Timberlane, Central, and Merrimack could finish in the last three spots in the playoffs. Which would mean Singster, Veilleux, and Hudon in the first round for top seeds. Those are quality pitchers.

Yeah, Class L playoff seedings never have a dull moment. Grab a top 4 seed and maybe get buzzed in single elim by a stud. Doesn't seem fair, but it is what it is and makes it Very interesting.

Keene and Salem made good moves last week. Goffstown still has a Lot of work to do. Londonderry and NN on consecutive days.
As expected, never write-off Keene.

Exciting week to determine Regular season Champ, Top 4 and bottom 4. I don't think even Winnie is mathematically eliminated yet. Great year of baseball so far. Best to come.

Class I looks like a super fantastic ending coming. Thank God we can get the standings here and know what is going on. Good job by the "Heal" guys. Can Portsmouth stay undefeated and win it all? I think they can but will really have to earn it this year.

Portsmouth will have to show some pitching depth to go undefeated, with their remaining five games over a seven day stretch, starting Friday. The rematch with St. Thomas is Saturday afternoon in Dover.
Somersworths Dave Parma pitched a gem, beating Campbells Cullin Baker tonight. 5-1 Somersworth. Baker gave up three home runs to take the loss. Parma gave up a solo shot of his own on a first pitch fastball in the 5th. DJ Colbert finished it off pitching in the 7th. Junior Justin Beckey had two home runs and three rbi’s for Somerswroth.
A great game between Salem and Merrimack tonight had the Tomahawks cling to a 7-6 win. Back and forth for the whole game with clutch hitting from both sides. Spencer Damon had his best game of the season going the distance for Merrimack.

It was a tense game as it was a must win for Merrimack to stay alive. Tempers flared a few times between players and certainly between umpires and Merrimack coaching staff. Colby Hoyle had a nice game at the plate for the Tomahawks missing his first homerun by inches. Chase Distacio also had a couple of hits for the Tomahawks. I was really impressed with Josh Treff who really showed some great arm strength behind the plate for Salem.

Salem starting pitcher threw well and Joe Morin had a shut out relief inning to give Salem a chance in the bottom of the seventh.

I'll be at North vs. Goffstown tomorrow also, looks like a good crowd indeed.
"Which would mean Singster, Veilleux, and Hudon in the first round for top seeds. Those are quality "

This is what I'm talking about Veilleux throws the CG yesterday beats South, Singster goes the distance and beats Concord, Monday Hudon went 8 innings before being relieved and losing to North in the 9th.

Someone going to get knocked off by these top arms on low seeds. Can't assume anything in the first round.
Anything can happen in playoffs - even the top arms can be knocked off. Veilleux may have pitched a complete game but Central only scored one run off of an unknown South sophomore pitcher. Teams still have to score runs to win. Walking 6 or 7 batters can be detrimental to winning a game especially against a team with big bats.... The Class L tournament can be won by 7 or 8 teams this year. The only games that matter are in June.............
North beat Goffstown today in a very entertaining game. Bisceglia started for Goffstown and helped them jump out to 7-1 lead with a 2-run HR in the first. Goffstown leadoff hitter Jake Glauser hit two homeruns. Their scoring stopped in the 4th for Grizzlies with Kyle Turner throwing very well for North over the final three innings. (Eatman - much better life to his fastball and lots of bite on his slider compared to the Alvirne game!)

The Nashua North offense came alive in the 5th with Joe Breen hitting a loud two out, 3-run HR to center, cutting the lead to 7-5. North would push across 6 runs on 6 hits in the top of the 6th to take the lead for good. Big hits for North were a 2-run go-ahead single for Kevin McGowan and another HR for Joe Breen, a 2 run shot (again with 2 outs.)

I truly hope to see these teams battle again in the playoffs. A lot of these guys leave it all on the field and its fun to watch that kind of passion on the field.

Ever been to Keene?

PS This one is gone at any field in the state:
Joe Breen's First HR

Double PS You know these are the top two teams in the state, right?

That Goffstown vs. North game was great, I obviously liked it a lot since a many of my fall ball boys were in the fight. 5 homers all by Showcase League Alumni Glauser, Breen, and Biseglia. Turner was dirty just like Tewks said, I think he's the best pitcher on North personally but there are plenty to choose from on that staff.

Goffstown got off to that 7-1 lead and I heard parents talking mercy rule, an impressive come back and a lot of fun to watch.
Question on Class L playoff seedings: Do non-class L games count for seeding purposes?

Goffstown and NN have the same record, but one of G Town's wins is against Class I Bedford. In this case it doesn't matter since NN beat them head to head. But is NN really in sole possesion of first place? I would think yes.

Keene is 12-7, but has a win and a loss to non-Class L teams (ConVal and Brattleboro). So is Keene really 11-6 for Class L playoff seedings?

Looks like Keene does not play Dover and will have 18 Class L games, all other Class L teams play 19 Class L games. How does this factor in the playoff seedings? Just curious.
A lot going on in this thread! Here we go:
All games for a Class L team count in standings for Class L. While I will keep my full opinion on that to myself- I am not a fan of that particular rule.
I just told the Goffstown coach the other day that I dislike his park more than any in the state that I have been to.It is not even close to suggested regulations for distances. BUT, that being said, both teams are playing on the same field. I find it hard to say that is a distinct home-field advantage as each team has the same chance to hit it out, yet I also feel it does alter the NH high school game (overall) for both sides playing in a park that size. Would I rather Lion's field, Alumni field in Keene, and Dover's field be brought up to "snuff"- yes, but since that isn't going to happen- play ball and leave it at that.
Right now Nashua North is the #1 seed in L. That doesn't mean it will stay that way. There are still too many factors left to take into account. This year in L has been interesting. More parity than I have seen in a while. I honestly believe there are at least 6-7 teams with a legit shot at winning it all. It should be fun!
I also feel that Coach Abood has done an amazing job at Memorial this year.

Memorial was 3 for 3 last week to climb up to 6th place in Class L.

On Monday they beat Nashua South behind 13 hits. Tim Gregiore, Luke Reynolds, Domingo Cruz, Jake Mills and Tim Sullivan each had 2 hits. MMHS scored 7 runs in the 3rd capped off by a 2 run double by Jon Mersereau. Luke Reynolds pitched 4 innings and sophomore Ryan Boulay pitched the final 3 giving up one run over 3.

On Thursday MMHS beat Trinity 3-0. The game was 0-0 into the 5th when hot hitting Jake Mills hit a double to drive in the first 2 runs. Tim Sullivan pitched 6 innings striking out 10 and allowing 2 hits. Brandon Stevens closed out the game quickly w/ a flyout and 2 strikeouts.

On Saturday MMHS beat Pinkerton 8-4 by pounding out 15 hits. Hitting highlights include: a triple over the centerfielder's head by Bill Dubois, a squeeze bunt single by Tim Gregiore, and a 2-3 performance by Domingo Cruz after he won the 100 meter dash, the long jump and ran the final leg for the winning 4x400 meter relay team in the Manchester city track meet. Steve Schack pitched a complete game and struck out 9.
What was great about yesterday's Souhegan vs. Portsmouth game was not just the great baseball and fantastic pitching from both sides.

I saw two parents of players who are in the Showcase League neither of their sons were playing in this game. One of their sons isn't even in Class I. I asked him what he was doing at the game, thought maybe a nephew or family friend was on one of the teams.

He said- "I heard this was going to be a good game"

And I'll bet he heard it here on hsbaseballweb from you guys keeping the message board alive with great posts. Thats fantastic.

From the Nashua Telegraph:
The Sabers became Portsmouth’s 58th consecutive victim, falling 4-0 as their defense (seven errors) undid a fine pitching performance by Terry Dugdale. Dugdale went all seven innings for Souhegan (12-2), giving up just five hits and one earned run. Matt Schagrin and James Astbury had the Sabers’ only hits. Chris Almeida had a fantastic fourth-inning catch in center field for Souhegan.

From Foster's Daily Democrat:
AMHERST — The Portsmouth baseball team made it 57 straight wins with Monday's 4-0 pivotal Class I win at Souhegan.

Nate Jones tossed a complete-game two-hitter for the Clippers (14-0). He struck out seven and walked one.

Offensively, Aidan O'Leary had two of Portsmouth's seven hits with a two-out double in the first that plated the team's first run.

Portsmouth hosts Kennett Wednesday night at 6:30.

I was really hoping to make this game as I work with some Souhegan players and I'd really like to see NHMonty's son swing the bat. Hopefully I'll be able to see both teams in a playoff game.
Joe Marchilena has a very comprehensive recap of the game on his great site http://www.nh-highschoolsports.com/
He also has a nice photo album of the game as well.

Clippers take advantage of Sabers’ mistakes

AMHERST – There’s a simple explanation for how the Portsmouth High School baseball team beat Souhegan on Monday.

The Sabers made mistakes, and the Clippers took advantage of just about every one of them.

The result was a 4-0 win for Portsmouth, its 57th straight win in Class I. Three of those runs were unearned, and the fourth came after a botched double play and a passed ball in the first inning.

In all, the Sabers made five errors and managed just two hits against Portsmouth starter Nate Jones, who pitched a complete-game shutout, striking out seven and walking one.

“They took advantage of everything that we did,” Souhegan coach Bill Dod said. “We felt that we were close and we had some people in scoring position, and just couldn’t get that one key hit.”

Souhegan (12-2) got a solid performance from sophomore pitcher Terry Dugdale, who also went seven innings and allowed one earned run on six hits and five walks with five strikeouts.

While the Clippers (14-0) seemed to get the timely hits, coach Tim Hopley felt they could have done more with their bats.

“We didn’t swing the bats as well as we can,” Hopley said. “A lot of that credit goes to Terry. He was fantastic. He threw all his pitches in all the counts. He battled and battled. We had a couple of opportunities where if we had gotten one hit late in an inning, it could have been five, six, seven (runs). He came at us, he bore down at us and got big outs.”

Dugdale stranded Portsmouth runners in scoring position in six innings, but too often, his defense let him down. The Souhegan offense couldn’t do much more against Jones, as the Sabers had just three base runners all day, only one of whom reached second base.

Matt Schagrin had a double and James Astbury had Souhegan’s other hit. For Portsmouth, Aidan O’Leary had two hits with a run scored and a RBI, while Mike Montville walked twice and scored twice.

“We had a little mistake that put a runner on second base, and they got a base hit,” Dod said. “We made an error, they got a base hit in the third inning. When we made a mistake, they were strong enough to come back. Defensively, we did some good things, but you have to play on a higher level when you play the best and we were slightly behind.”

The Clippers took the lead in the first inning. Jones hit a one-out single, but was taken out at second on a fielder’s choice by Montville. Souhegan had a chance for an inning-ending double play, but couldn’t get the throw to first off, and Montville wound up on second after a passed ball.

O’Leary battled through a nine-pitch at bat and turned the miscue into a run by smashing a double to right-center field, scoring Montville.

“Aidan’s at bat in the first inning, he just battled and battled and then had the hit to score the first run,” Hopley said. “We kind of took advantage of what they gave us to give us a little breathing room.”

The Clippers took more in the third inning. Jack Gonsalves opened the inning by reaching base on a throwing error by Tyler Manoogian, and went to second on a sacrifice by Jones. Montville walked and O’Leary flew out to center before Conor Trefethen singled to right to score Gonsalves, making it 2-0.

Montville opened the fifth by drawing another walk and O’Leary followed with a single. Dugdale was able to get two outs around a bases-loading walk to Quinn McCann.

But a ground ball by Rob Welch was bobbled by third baseman Astbury, allowing Montville to score to make it 3-0 and leave the bases loaded. Before he could throw another pitch, Dugdale was called for a balk, bringing in O’Leary for a 4-0 lead.

Dugdale didn’t allow a hit to the final 14 batters he faced, but six reached base safely thanks to three walks and three errors.

On the other side, Jones retired 10 in a row after allowed two runners to reach with two outs in the fourth inning.

“They came out swinging the bats and he was able to mix things up,” Hopely said of Jones. “He threw his cutter, his breaking ball, and kept them off balance. It kind of took away some of their aggressiveness as the game wore on, and that put him in a better position as to what he could throw thereafter.”

Both teams have two games remaining in the regular season. Portsmouth hosts Kennett on Wednesday and Milford on Saturday, while Souhegan hosts Con-Val on Wednesday and travels to Milford on Friday.
Tewks,

You won't get to see Mike swing much, he has been walked 10 times in last 5 games, close to 20 times in 14 games. I think he has about 35 official plate appearances in 14 games.

I am sure its a bit frustrating to him and what I see is if he gets anything near the plate he takes a hack even if its not the best pitch to hit. Great lesson in dealing with adversity.

I do think he is looking forward to his summer schedule.

On the plus side he has been on base a ton and Adian O'Leary and the guys hitting after him have done a great job. That's why its a team game.

I figured this would be the case for him given the numbers he put up last year and the reputation he's built up. He's not going to be a surprise to anybody in NH or anybody who has a clue in this region. Good for him for not chasing. He's earned his respect around here and will get guys challenging him soon enough!
