It was only about 60 degrees up here in the Motherlode, but it was still a sunny day. Our first day of tryouts were yesterday and it was filled with with excitement from coaches, players and parents. I am happy to say that my son looked pretty good and recieved a fair amount of compliments from the coaches, but that doesn't seem to settle my nervousness very much. With 22 kids trying out for the freshman team, cuts are inevitable.

As a freshman's father, I can only sit back and hope for the best. I am very proud of the fact that in addition to year round baseball for the last two years, my sons commitment to strength training and individual lessons have put him in a position to perform his very best. If its not enough to make the team, I will still be proud of his effort. I am trying to take the advice of so many others on this website to just enjoy these years because they go by so fast......and Not STRESS OUT.

Good Luck to anyone else out their that has a son trying out for a team at whatever level they may be at. Its truly a great time of year.
Thanks, ctiger. I'll pass that on to him.

This has really reinforced a lesson for him. He has worked extremely hard in the past year, more so than normal, to raise his game. And when he saw how others compared to him at tryouts, he realized the value of hard work.

Now he tells me he is determined to work harder, because he wants to break in to varsity. Not very likely at a huge 5A school with a great program (chances slim to none, & Slim left for the coast last week). But he won't know until he tries.
