I am a varsity high school coach in central Ohio. Pitchers and catchers start here on Monday, Feb. 19th. I was wondering what some of you cover on your first day of pitchers and catchers.
I still have some players who are still playing basketball, so I don't want to get into too much until they get there.
After getting the gym set up, we'll probably go over a few basic rules and expectations, throwing & catching fundamentals and then some drill work.
What do some of you other coaches do on the very first day?

The pitchers usually have to be early because they need that extra week to get their arm ready, and of course they need the catchers to receive them. Be sure that pitchers are ready to go physically before they throw bullpen or live. This is the time were pitchers trying too hard to impress you, may bother their arm.
We aren't allowed to bring in pitchers and catchers a week earlier. For us, on the 26th, we will have our Varsity and Junior Varsity tryouts. On the following saturday, we will have freshmen tryouts. Naturally, we will save some room on that JV for a freshman or two. We have a legit tryout. We time the 60, we rate arms throwing from 120 feet and 250, we have a couple of coaches in the cages (2) rating hitters, and we have the pitchers throw a limited pen. Our players know that they must have their arms ready and that they will get 3 days of tryouts. After that we will have our first cut. We will have a second cut after the basketball players tryout. Then, we will decide who plays where and at what level. Of course this can change with the progression of the season as well as if a freshman standsout.

Some things we do/Mention:

  • Safety talk at tryout stations.
  • Players list 3 positions and will be seen at 3 positions.
  • We need to be able to identify the players so it is important that they wear their PE T-shirts with their names on them.
  • Any negative behaviors will not be tolerated. (throw bat etc.)
  • Their parents can come to tryouts but they'd better stay out of the way and if they communicate with a player at all, they are gone.
  • The phrase is "student-athlete so their grades do matter.

Well, this is a brief description of what we do.
