My wife and I took our first trip to Yankee Stadium (and NYC) this past weekend....going in I expected an incredible experience and I was blown away. I was totally in awe of that place. Yes, the stadium itself is past its prime, but the history that goes along with the stadium is moving, to say the least. We got there early enough to get into Monument Park and see the plaques and retired numbers of past Yankee greats and the view from right down there at field level as you're leaving Monument Park is awesome.

The game itself was over early, Yankees won 21-4. Tons of homers (6 for NY, 1 for TB, including Carlos Pena into the upper deck in right). It was nice to go to a game though where all the fans were actually behind the home team. This was my first MLB game outside of Camden Yards where unfortunately the crowds are usually half full of opposing fans. It was almost a football like feel because of the passion and energy of the crowd.

By the way, I'm an O's fan. I never have liked the Yankees. This trip was purely about being a baseball fan and seeing the same field where Ruth, Joe D., Mickey, and Yogi once played. I have to say, love or hate the Yankees, all baseball fans should make it a point to get to The Bronx before the end of next season when they put the wrekcing ball to that place. It was an emotional experience that will be with me forever.

Yes, any ticket holder can go through Monument Park. But get there early. The gates opened at 11:00, we got there at about 11:10, and when we got to the end of the line, it was all the way at the top of the stadium and the entrance to the park is on the lowest level. And, it wasn't long before the line to the park was closed off, so we got lucky. The line moves fast though...we were in line for may 20 minutes. It's well worth it.
We went a couple of years ago. It was amazing. Especially since the boys are both huge Yankee fans. If you didn't already know, you can purchase special tours of the stadium. We went and got to see monument park, many of the ins and outs and got to sit in the dugout which we got to by walking around the warning track. We went up to the media areas and got to check the view. I believe that on certain days, you can even tour the locker room. There were only a dozen or so in our group so it is nice and cozy and no crowd. Got lots of trivia and history. Would recommend to all.
Unfortunately, the real Yankee Stadium disappeared 30 years ago when the Yankees on a two-year reconstruction project, gutted everything except the outer walls and inside build their version of Shea Stadium. To this day, it is one of the greatest tragedies to beset Major League baseball, and hardly anyone remembers.

I hope it was an afternoon game. Wink
Have been to the stadium many times but last week was special. My older son called about a month ago and asked if it was possibl;e to get tickets for the 16 of July. He wanted to bring his host gfamily and some teammates down to the game from the summer collegiate league. Well after tons of calls I secured 3 sets of box seats 12 in all.

They made the 3 hour drive down early in the morning. We got to the stadium, parked around 11:30, jumped on the subway and headed down to "ground zero" and lower Manhattan. Walked around the city for a few hours, got back on the subway, made another stop at a "National Landmark" that is a favorite stop of mine. Had a bite to eat, back on the subway and returned to the stadium by 5:00. Great game, great day. The boys were from TX, FL, Kentucky, CA so it was a first for many.

On the way home both my son's said "dad, thank you for sharing, that was a great day"
I grew up in West Texas loving the Astros (maybe the most supportive fans around). Moved to the metroplex and became a Ranger fan, so didn't really have much use for the Yankees as they were always beating us.

Then I went to NYC with a group of students/parents to do the whole Manhattan/Broadway experience. However, being a baseball fan, I knew I had to see Yankee Stadium before it was no more. The tour guides were insistent on not letting me ride the subway, so we loaded up the charter and headed to the Bronx.

I was in awe. Yankee Stadium was majestic and I have to agree 100% with Emanski's Heroes, "This trip was purely about being a baseball fan and seeing the same field where Ruth, Joe D., Mickey, and Yogi once played. Couldn't bring yourself to switch your allegiance to San Francisco eh? What did you do between 1957 and 1962?
We've been to NYC many times but to Yankee Stadium only once. My then young son insisted on wearing his Nomar Garciaparra t-shirt up in the cheap seats. Big mistake. Seems there were a few Derek Jeter fans in the crowd that night.
