I live in the northeast, and a friend of mine who just finished his freshman year at JUCO is starting to shop around for schools after his 2 years are up. He brought up the school and mentioned the location, aesthetics, etc. Any insight on the baseball program and whatnot? He isn't a member on the site but is aware of my posting and any information would be appreciated from his front.

it might be in florida, not sure. i heard they have good baseball program, but you have to be a stud to play there or get playing time. the cost is around 18000 per year to go there not including incidentals. so if you have no savings account, i would not suggest letting your child go there because the loan re-payment is high. that is, if you can get a loan with a terrible credit rating like most people have these days. I guess some college loaning institutions don't need parental credit for the loans (co-sign). That translates to about 80,000 dollars for an education in an unknown college. would you rather hire someone with a degree from Purdue, Tennessee, or Florida or someone with a degree from FLAGLER? Less than half the cost at the other colleges.

Flagler is in St. Augustine and its campus is largely made up of one large building (albeit a beautiful building). Go to the school's website for details. Baseball would not seem to be anything special. Small school. Private, and expensive, but if small is what you are looking for, it is probably great. Recommend you also look at studentsreview.com--just google students review Flagler--and you will get insights from students who have attended Flagler. Same for all schools, for that matter--studentsreview is a great website.
Just thought I would update this since we visited Flagler a couple of weeks ago. Last year was their first as D2 and they did OK - had a winning season and made it to their conference tournament. They are the only Florida team in the Peach Belt conference, traveling mostly to southern Georgia, South Carolina, and Alabama, and also play the Florida D2s. They are expensive compared to a public school, but not compared to the other D2s in Florida.

Head Coach Barnett has been there 22 or so years. He was very approachable and answered all of our questions. Two new assistant coaches have been hired - both just out of college/pro ball. Jonathan Holt is the recruiting coordinator/pitching coach. We didn't meet the other guy. Coach Holt was on the U. Tampa D2 national championship team a few years ago and then spent 2-3 years in the Indians organization (I think). Very personable and enthusiastic. Both he and Coach Barnett were right up front about the depth chart - we didn't have to ask. They had it posted right on the wall and went over it in detail.

Facilities are not spectacular, but they're serviceable. They are doing about $1.2 million in improvements over the off-season.

The school itself is a small liberal arts college, middle of the road academically but Coach Barnett does very much appreciate good grades. They only accept 25% of applicants, but part of that is that they just get so many - who doesn't want to go to school on the beach? No science or math majors, which might be a sticking point for us, but that's still under consideration. Good school if you want to be a teacher. They have pre-law and sports management. Beautiful campus. Someone told me that it wasn't air conditioned, but don't worry - it is!

I did in fact check studentsreview.com. It seems that if you want to go to a party school, this isn't it. Smile
I really like Tyler Barnett. He was a summer teammate of son, way back. Jonathon was also in the same circle and played for the cross-town HS (Leesburg) rival. His dad was a NY Yankee and older brother Josh was a (star) Flagler player, and now a juco head coach (Lake-Sumter). Lotta good baseball dna there. Good folks too. Good luck! Smile
