I'm noticing a lot of high school teams in my area (Philly) are taking Florida trips.  The question I have is, how do teams manage having to organize/fundraise well prior to tryouts?

What do they do with kids who fundraise and then don't make the team?

Can anyone share the different ways teams manage this?

In our situation most of the fundraising was done the year before the trip so typically only players on a roster were raising the money.

One way of getting around the cut player issue is we didn't do a specific "trip" fundraiser.  All the money raised by our teams (frosh, JV, V) went into a general fund that benefited everyone (equipment, outerwear, field improvements, tournaments). For the F & JV players that weren't part of the varsity trip this year, there was an understanding that as they moved through the system they would get their chance to experience the varsity trip. In four years on the booster board I can't think of anyone feeling they should be reimbursed for any fundraising they did in the past (if their player was cut from a team).

Spot on, jerseydad.  That is exactly what keewartson's team does.

There is a dollar amount that is expected to be raised each year (per player, JV and V), and another amount the family is expected to pay "for the trip" (V).  If more than the expected amount is funraised by the player, the less the family has to pay "for the trip".

Over the last 4 years, whether 250 miles traveled for 3 nights or 2500 miles for 7 nights, the amount needed to fund raise/pay was the same, which may have been due to generous donors to the program some years.

And since I have not been asked for money until long after the trip, my educated guess is that the current year's trip is paid for from the monies collected the year before.

The players travel as a team by chartered bus/other and parents going on the trip is purely optional.
