My son has been a Freshman for one day now and came home with football equipment after going to the open gym at the high school..lol. He played football for a couple of years when younger so that isn't my concern. My concern is that this is the first time he has ever really worked out in his life. Will lifting for football be bad for his baseball ability? I would think it would be ok as he needs to put some muscle mass on him. He is a fairly solid kid 6' tall and around 165-170lbs (still growing as he is only 14). I don't know much about football workouts but I wouldn't think he'd bulk up too much during football season to really affect his baseball season..other then he'd be much stronger going into the season. He is a pitcher so do I have to worry about his "tightening up", or is that an old wives tale and I'm worried about nothing.

Probably a good thing overall. There's some risk of a growth related injury from the lifting given that he's still maturing. On the hand, you've accepted the injury risk from playing football so the growth related injury risk is probably not a big deal and I'd be a lot more worried about a football injury if he didn't lift.

I may be missing it, but I have not seen any research that agrees with this unless there is injury to the growth plate which means something is being done incorrectly. I have read about programs who start resistance training as young as 1st and 2nd grade with fantastic results.

Losing flexibility is not directly related to the lifting. While I am sure there is some cause and effect, an athlete should be stretching 6 days a week and if done correctly, there will be no loss of flexibility.
