Dear Dibsy,

It should be rather obvious to anyone who knows anything about college baseball.

You would think that after years of posts about this subject, and the many discussions directly related to how good grades enhance an athlete's choice of schools - you would have learned something by now.

Keep reading - sooner or later - odds are you will understand. Razz

If two players have the same baseball ability but one is a good student while the other is a poor student--- who do you think the school takes ??

That is what being a good student has to do with the ball player and his baseball ability!!!

Funny thing---college coaches and pro scouts like to know that stuff !!!
Saying someone is a good student when asked about their baseball ability, is like when you ask is a girl is attractive and get she has great personality.

Any showcase worth attending will have 60 yard times, release times and Velocity times listed.

On the Birmingham profiles, 27 players listed as pitchers, but only 8 pitchers listed as throwing low 80's in showcase review. what did the other 19 pitchers throw??
Andy, Smart kids have better long range careers and make better teamates. They make better decisions and have a tendency to get in less trouble. I always look at a kids grades and his SAT scores when I get the chance. Smart kids figure things out on the field a lot better than dummies.

Why do you think so many teams are testing kids before they draft them? The girl with the good personality will go a lot farther than the girl with the poor personality.

If you want velocity and 60 times, bring your stopwatch and radar gun and quit expecting someone else to do your work for you.

bbscout,

Actually many MLB scouts want to draft as dumb as player as you can get.(no options)and cheap to sign.

Good example: a player I had helped out, threw very hard up to 95 mph and MLB scouts were complaining he was too smart and had too many options. I asked so you rather draft a dumb guy, They were like yes, they are much cheaper to sign. Anyways the player went to college despite being drafted and has played for Team USA and was a college all american.

As far grades are concern, yes grades are important, but if you can't play no one will care about your sat scores or GPA

Andy, Only dumb scouts want to draft dumb players.

The guy who can't play and is dumb is one who won't go anywhere. The guy who can't play and is smart will get a degree and have a chance at success. The guy who is smart and can play will have a chance at a successful big league career.

Bring your gun and stopwatch and don't worry if the times are posted or not. Do your own work.
BBscout,

The scouting world is filled with dumb scouts. Many scouts work extremely hard, alot would not know a prospect if they trip over it. You are talk about a professional where 1/3 of the MLB Scouts get fired every year.

Good example, a DNF throws 94-95 mph 7 days before the team loses the rights to him. 15 MLB scouts have radar guns on him. The DNF team has a pre draft workout, the day before they lose the rights to him and the scouting director does not even invite the player to the workout. Real Smart, some one else drafts the player and the player totally dominates a NCAA Summer League this summer.Ranked the Number 1 pro prospect in the league by baseball america.
