If your son is talented enough to get either a DI scholarship or possibly MLB interest then why does he need this coach or his program? Better yet, let's say your kid is a D2 or D3 prospect.....why would you fork out so much money just for a summer team experience? I can't see where anybody benefits from this extortion?

So it sounds like you have decided not to participate in the coaches summer program. Why would you want to be part of the high school team if he is the head coach and his assistants are currently harassing him? Are you prepared for the turmoil you might cause for not only yourself but your spouse, other siblings and family?

There is the best option:

1.) Don't participate in the summer program and don't pay the stupid extortion money. And if he doesn't make the high school team......so what, no big deal. The coach is an idiot anyway. Don't cause yourself anymore grief and let it go.

The old school option:

2.) Call the coach and schedule a face to face meeting with him. Hand him five hundred dollar bills and tell him that this is your down payment on the restitution the court will order for the butt whoopin he'll get if your son doesn't make the high school team. Tell him he better not go to the administration or you'll make his life miserable until he resigns........Intimidation can be a two way street.

Now there is an option that a Coach like him will clearly understand.

I like it!
I'm sorry you and your son especially have to go through this but I'm sure you will turn it into a valuable learning experience. Your son can now see that life isn't always fair, there are jerks in every walk of life, when faced with a roadblock you find a way to deal with it instead of griping and complaining. He will be a much better person because of this.
Signing ceremony this past Friday. Who was there? HS AD, Head Coach and assistant coaches, travel head coach and pitching coach, hitting instructor. Everyone shared the stage, but it was about the player. If he does well at the next level, each and every one of them gets to say, "I coached that player." Each of these coaches had a huge impact. And there was plenty of love and recognition to go around. That's how it should be.

It is so sad to me that there are coaches out there like the OP's.
The scenario you describe is an extreme one for sure, but if you take the actual $ outlay out of the equation, the bigger issue is the ability of the high school coach to exert influence over the young man's summer team decision with the hammer of high school playing time. Welcome to an issue that Arizona kids have faced forever, and one that is new to you people in Cali.

There's a reason that states like Georgia and Texas have rules that forbid high school coaches from also coaching their players in the summer. This practice was outlawed in California as well until a couple of years ago ( time line ??).

For the majority of HS programs ,this will probably be no issue. However, it does open up a huge can o' worms and allow the potential for abuse like you are describing.

In Arizona, the rules state that HS coaches are allowed to work with their kids in the summer, but during the school year they are supposed to be hands off. Last year, the Arizona Interscholastic Association, in all their wisdom, determined that fall play was fine too provided that the team was a "Club". They ruled that "Club" was at least partially defined as being a non- profit entity with a Board to vote on things such as selection of a coach. This created a mad dash of HS programs forming 501 C3 non profits to comply.
Good luck with this...its a very slippery slope for all involved.
Cali - How good is your son ? If he's good enough to move on without HS ball, then I think he might be good enough to lead the team out of this mess.

If he's up for it, encourage him to tell the coach he's willing to deal with the consequences, but that he's not playing on coach's summer team. Then make it known that he's taking this position. It might be hell for a little while - might even lose his HS career - but it could lead to much greater things for your son.

But I would stress, not to make him do this if he doesn't absolutely think he can handle it.

I have no dog in this fight, but I have to tell you that very few threads and posts have ever made my blood boil over more than this one. This "coach" is just a crook, and he just doesn't give a rip about the kids or the game. I hope he is chased out of town with torches and pitchforks, I really do!

Best of luck to you calisportsfan. I hope this somehow works out for your son and his high school.
@ BaseballHeaven...

I looked back on the recent posts...how did "we" find out that it was the <school named edited out> baseball program?

Doesnt sound like something Coach <coach name edited out> would do?

Has there been a change in the coaching staff...hard to believe this coming from <school name edited out>. IMO coaches from all their programs would catch wind of this and 'mentor' the baseball coach.

Many many many coaches would no longer have their job after something like this. Is the HC still employed?

Name was drop on a different site- <site name edited out>, but hasn't been confirmed by anyone. Yes, They do have a new coach who was with the program a couple of years back.

AS I SAID, NO ONE HAS CONFIRMED, that I have seen. I hope the the guessing doesn't get anyone in trouble. No, I don't have a connection to <school name edited out...JBB>, but I do live in the area.

This school does have a new head coach this year. The new head coach is a long time teacher at the school and is very well respected. He is returning to be the head coach after recently being an assistant for two years and previous to that he was the head coach for several years but retired to spend more time with his growing family.

I was very pleased to see him return to run the program.

This school was ranked in the top 10 in the country as recently as 2007 and willing their top section 2-3 times between 2005-2007, but has not done well over the last three years ending up in last place in their conference last year and not qualifying for post season play for the first time in more years that I can remember. Up to this point they have always been a powerhouse.

Many of their families have not been happy with their program due to the recent lack of a off season program (summer, fall, or even sixth period PE) which the school used to have and most successful programs have in the area.

Not saying it is right, but they may be trying to right the ship and provide an off season program where they have a good amount of players participating in it vs only a few.
As a moderator, I have deleted about 4 posts near the end here. Not because the posters said anything wrong, but because in my view too much information about the player himself was starting to come out.

The OP may have gotten himself in too deep here...hard for me to tell, he certainly raised an issue that many deal with in various ways.

I have become concerned that the player may have been put in jeopardy with his HS coach and none of us wants that. I believe the proper people have the information they need to decide what was real and what should be fixed, if anything.

Good luck to this young player. I hope his season goes well.

I will now lock this thread, an action I have never taken before. If any other moderator has a problem with this, I made a copy of the posts I deleted and we can revive them if necessary.

Thanks! Wink
