Go to the principal and show him you tried to work something out. You want to know exactly what's going on, what all the moneyis going for and why it's not needed.
I agree with going to the principal on this but IMO, the only way I can see this to be effective is all the parents of the players are on the same page and go in as a whole to represent all the players in the program. If you go in as just one, it's unlikely you'll get anywhere with it and the coach wins out.
Sounds like you have nothing to lose now. Fights on.
Unfreakin believable.

This is a Private School that you are paying to send your son to?? To learn what ???
I would be taking my $$ and my son to a more enlightened and rewarding school enviornment.
If the principal/headmaster won't deal with it effectively, you can always go to the governing body of all the private schools...I'm sure they would be most interested in this little shell game.
If your son is talented enough to get either a DI scholarship or possibly MLB interest then why does he need this coach or his program? Better yet, let's say your kid is a D2 or D3 prospect.....why would you fork out so much money just for a summer team experience? I can't see where anybody benefits from this extortion?
So it sounds like you have decided not to participate in the coaches summer program. Why would you want to be part of the high school team if he is the head coach and his assistants are currently harassing him? Are you prepared for the turmoil you might cause for not only yourself but your spouse, other siblings and family?
There is the best option:
1.) Don't participate in the summer program and don't pay the stupid extortion money. And if he doesn't make the high school team......so what, no big deal. The coach is an idiot anyway. Don't cause yourself anymore grief and let it go.
The old school option:
2.) Call the coach and schedule a face to face meeting with him. Hand him five hundred dollar bills and tell him that this is your down payment on the restitution the court will order for the butt whoopin he'll get if your son doesn't make the high school team. Tell him he better not go to the administration or you'll make his life miserable until he resigns........Intimidation can be a two way street.

Now there is an option that a Coach like him will clearly understand.
I like it!
Sounds like you made your choice already.
Move on.
Move on.
I see that you are in California and if you are in So Cal your son can play in the ABCL league and blow off the HS team. This league was formed for situations like yours.

Go to the ABCL link.
If it was me I would get him all set up to play somewhere else so he is OK, then do the nuclear option and get this coach out of there.

I'm sorry you and your son especially have to go through this but I'm sure you will turn it into a valuable learning experience. Your son can now see that life isn't always fair, there are jerks in every walk of life, when faced with a roadblock you find a way to deal with it instead of griping and complaining. He will be a much better person because of this.
quote:I am hoping someone has some experience, words of wisdom on how to handle a situation with a new high school coach who has created a summer team (1800.00)
And the sad part is if he can do it people will fork over the 1800.
As an old timer I have to say "What the heck happened"?
Signing ceremony this past Friday. Who was there? HS AD, Head Coach and assistant coaches, travel head coach and pitching coach, hitting instructor. Everyone shared the stage, but it was about the player. If he does well at the next level, each and every one of them gets to say, "I coached that player." Each of these coaches had a huge impact. And there was plenty of love and recognition to go around. That's how it should be.
It is so sad to me that there are coaches out there like the OP's.

Congrats to the 2B family!

Thank you. I didn't mean to make this about 2B. It's just that I feel so lucky to have such a classy bunch of coaches. I can't understand these HS coaches who can't understand that it's a team effort, whether they like it or not.
In response to the requests for update...there isn't one. Unchanged. Tryouts are next week and we are at a stalemate. I wish I could say more but that isn't smart at this point. I will tell more once it can't hurt my son!
We understand the need to keep your cards close to your chest right now.
And I think I can honestly say that we all are hoping for the best for your son. I'm sure he has learned some things (good/bad/indifferent) that will help him mature and grow up.
Good luck Dad.

The scenario you describe is an extreme one for sure, but if you take the actual $ outlay out of the equation, the bigger issue is the ability of the high school coach to exert influence over the young man's summer team decision with the hammer of high school playing time. Welcome to an issue that Arizona kids have faced forever, and one that is new to you people in Cali.
There's a reason that states like Georgia and Texas have rules that forbid high school coaches from also coaching their players in the summer. This practice was outlawed in California as well until a couple of years ago ( time line ??).
For the majority of HS programs ,this will probably be no issue. However, it does open up a huge can o' worms and allow the potential for abuse like you are describing.
In Arizona, the rules state that HS coaches are allowed to work with their kids in the summer, but during the school year they are supposed to be hands off. Last year, the Arizona Interscholastic Association, in all their wisdom, determined that fall play was fine too provided that the team was a "Club". They ruled that "Club" was at least partially defined as being a non- profit entity with a Board to vote on things such as selection of a coach. This created a mad dash of HS programs forming 501 C3 non profits to comply.
Good luck with this...its a very slippery slope for all involved.

fyi, this is hardly new to "you people" in California.
Within my memory, there has not been a statewide rule in California. At least two sections in Southern California did have a rule against it until a couple of years ago.
I remember being at an off-season game between a southern section team and a city section team and the southern section coach was sitting in the stands while the city section coach was in the dugout. That was before they changed the rule.

that is what I was referring to
Cali - How good is your son ? If he's good enough to move on without HS ball, then I think he might be good enough to lead the team out of this mess.
If he's up for it, encourage him to tell the coach he's willing to deal with the consequences, but that he's not playing on coach's summer team. Then make it known that he's taking this position. It might be hell for a little while - might even lose his HS career - but it could lead to much greater things for your son.
But I would stress, not to make him do this if he doesn't absolutely think he can handle it.

THIS IS ABOUT TO END. MESSAGE SENT TO THE <school name edited out> HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPAL AND THE CIF STATE ADMINISTRATOR. I'M SURE THE COACH WILL NOW BE WARNED.

I have no dog in this fight, but I have to tell you that very few threads and posts have ever made my blood boil over more than this one. This "coach" is just a crook, and he just doesn't give a rip about the kids or the game. I hope he is chased out of town with torches and pitchforks, I really do!
Best of luck to you calisportsfan. I hope this somehow works out for your son and his high school.

Since tryouts start tomorrow in Northern California I hope things work out, it must be stressful.
@ BaseballHeaven...
I looked back on the recent posts...how did "we" find out that it was the <school named edited out> baseball program?
Doesnt sound like something Coach <coach name edited out> would do?
Has there been a change in the coaching staff...hard to believe this coming from <school name edited out>. IMO coaches from all their programs would catch wind of this and 'mentor' the baseball coach.
Many many many coaches would no longer have their job after something like this. Is the HC still employed?

Name was drop on a different site- <site name edited out>, but hasn't been confirmed by anyone. Yes, They do have a new coach who was with the program a couple of years back.
AS I SAID, NO ONE HAS CONFIRMED, that I have seen. I hope the the guessing doesn't get anyone in trouble. No, I don't have a connection to <school name edited out...JBB>, but I do live in the area.

This school does have a new head coach this year. The new head coach is a long time teacher at the school and is very well respected. He is returning to be the head coach after recently being an assistant for two years and previous to that he was the head coach for several years but retired to spend more time with his growing family.
I was very pleased to see him return to run the program.
This school was ranked in the top 10 in the country as recently as 2007 and willing their top section 2-3 times between 2005-2007, but has not done well over the last three years ending up in last place in their conference last year and not qualifying for post season play for the first time in more years that I can remember. Up to this point they have always been a powerhouse.
Many of their families have not been happy with their program due to the recent lack of a off season program (summer, fall, or even sixth period PE) which the school used to have and most successful programs have in the area.
Not saying it is right, but they may be trying to right the ship and provide an off season program where they have a good amount of players participating in it vs only a few.

As a moderator, I have deleted about 4 posts near the end here. Not because the posters said anything wrong, but because in my view too much information about the player himself was starting to come out.
The OP may have gotten himself in too deep here...hard for me to tell, he certainly raised an issue that many deal with in various ways.
I have become concerned that the player may have been put in jeopardy with his HS coach and none of us wants that. I believe the proper people have the information they need to decide what was real and what should be fixed, if anything.
Good luck to this young player. I hope his season goes well.
I will now lock this thread, an action I have never taken before. If any other moderator has a problem with this, I made a copy of the posts I deleted and we can revive them if necessary.
Thanks!![Wink](/static/images/graemlins/icon_wink.gif)
