Originally I thought John John was going to UVA to play baseball and football.... I guess he never really made it to the baseball stadium opting instead to concentrate on football. I'm assuming that ofcourse.

He red-shirted his freshman year in football and now just had a hugh set-back as I heard on the news tonight he had knee surgery that has ended his season.

I believe he did play some this year on special teams, but not sure...

A top prospect in the 07 MLB Draft I thought for sure his passion was baseball. Football I guess has a way of getting the hooks into players and I suppose a "full" scholarship as opposed to a partial was also a lure.

Do we know any or many players that have had success in playing both at a D1 school. I can't think of any right off the top...

Anyway, thought I'd share.

Getting in the Way-Back Machine:

Deion Sanders and Bo Jackson come to mind. Also Anthony Davis, if you remember back that far (USC in the early '70's). Also, I think Barty Smith may have pulled it off at UR, and maybe also Ken Willard at UNC, for those who go back even further. I have some memory that John Elway and Dan Marino were big time baseball prospects at one time, but I don't know if either played in college.

I haven't heard of many in recent years, though baseball doesn't get the pub that football does, so my guess is there are many but you just don't hear about them. UVA had a kid from Mechanicsville who went back and forth but never made much of a dent in either sport. The off-season burdens in both sports would seem to make this quite a load to carry.

I did read that the celebrated Oregon State QB is also a minor leaguer over the summer ... but his recent ACL tear makes you wonder how wise the combination is.
Condredge Holloway...Univ of Tenn...back in the 70's. I think he was a first team A-A in baseball...at least with The Sporting News...and a top QB for Tennessee...who went on to star in the CFL.

Todd Helton of UT was starting QB...in addition to his 1B/P duties..until a hot shot named Peyton Manning came on the scene.

danny ainge and chris wienke come to mind...as well as dave winfield (only player drafted in all three major sports) Locally, Ryan Pond was heavily recrutied in football and baseball, however attended NC State for baseball. I would say it is done in football/basketball crossover more so (Julius Peppers, Antonio Gates, Ronald Curry, Iverson was all state in both, this list seems to be longer than the baseball crossovers)
