Simply put, the Sox could have given him the same contract...but the opportunity for incentives and especially 500 HR's just would never have happened...unless Paulie or Jim Thome get hurt.

If that happens, we'll wish Big Frank was around to DH...if he remains healthy.

Just too many iffs and a bad fit under the circumstances but I would love to know if it was Kenny or Frank that broke off the discussion.
What team would guarentee a contract to someone past their prime that can't throw, field or run? The answer is nobody would. I don't think Thomas had to swallow his pride. He should be glad the A's are in need of offense, and will try to strike lightning in a bottle with Thomas. An incentive contract is all he's worth until he proves he can still play every day. The Sox have Konerko and Thome. It was time to say goodbye to the "Big Hurt"
It was a sad day in Chicago yesterday. While we all knew it was coming it still stings a little. I grew up watching this guy dominate the sport like no one ever, and he was clean. While he loved to put his foot in his mouth, he also was one of the few power hitters who wasnt too big to take pitches and walk. I have read moneyball and Frank Thomas is the ultimate moneyball player. Great OBP and little $.

Best of luck to Frank in Oakland. Next stop Hall of Fame.
Today's Sun Times story by DeLuca seems to prove that the Sox did NOT offer Frank a chance to pinch hit and back up Thome....on the other hand he may have been insulted if he was.

Stinks...is a good way to put it.

If Frank does well and Thome gets hurt....oops I'm being realistic.

Why couldn't Kenny have at least explored all options.

Don't understand it either. Seems like a low risk, possible high reward deal. He had what, 10 hr's in 100 ab's last year when healthy.
Only thing that makes sense is Sox feel he'll never get off d.l. or he's such a p.i.a. when he or team is not going well that it wasn't worth it.
Even though he does at times pay his stars real well there is a long history under Reinsdorf with Bulls & Sox of the greats leaving unhappy.
Thomas, Guillen, Mags, Fisk, Jordan, Pippen, Jackson and others.
Hope he gets 500 and/or hof as it appears he was one of the few who did it clean.
For better or worse, Frank is a stubborn guy and I think he feels like he can still do it....maybe he can. I think Frank didn't want to be a backup or a pinch hitter. I also think Kenny Williams really doesn't like him either so he is glad to see him go. At that price, it would have been easy to keep him......and you wouldn't have lsot any players to do it either.
Frank Thomas can still hit. He proved that last year before he got hurt. The fact of the matter is Oakland needed him in the lineup way more than the Sox did. I don't think the Sox thought Thomas was finished. It's just where would he play? The Sox are stacked, and ready for another World Series run. It's to bad Thomas can't be apart of it, but especially when they traded for Thome everyone knew Frank's days in Chicago were numbered.
