Please help, this is all new to me!
My son is a freshman and is getting solicitations from college winter camps. Is this a way to get schools to notice my son? Is this worth the investment? I am leaning towards, yes? I also figure it is a way for him to see some schools and get an idea of what he likes. Since he is only 14 is it too early, or are college coaches looking for potential? I want to help my son any way I can in this increasingly competitive process, and would appreciate any and all advice

It's a little early for those camps. As a freshman he should be emailing tons of coaches and getting information on the school and their program. Unless he is far ahead of those 16 year olds at camp it may hurt more than it will help. Gather as much info as you can and then start eliminating schools so you can spend your money more wisely on a few camps / showcases in the coming years.

Generally the consensus around here is to wait until your son is a contributor on the Varsity Level before lining up college camps.

That said, if your son has a "Dream" program that he wishes to attend and they offer a college camp, there is nothing wrong with establishing a relationship with a coach early on.

I have attended "Junior Days" with my son and noticed how the coaching staff had a developed rapport with several of the players in attendance. This was because they had each attended multiple college camps, this cannot hurt, if in fact your son has the "tools" to play at the next level.
