They usually have a good baseball program, but struggling a little more this year than in the past with slightly less than a .500 average for wins. A small D-1 in the SoCon which is quite competitive, really some good ball played. Several kids have been drafted over the years out of Furman's program.
No, not a fully funded program as of last year.
A very beautiful campus, and Greenville is a vibrant small city--very up and coming with a cool downtown. (It has a river and waterfall that run through the heart of it.) The school is on the edge of town, so not walking distance, but an easy drive.
Coach Smith is an upfront kind of guy and one you'd want your son to play for. He played ball for Furman as a college student, so has his heart in the program. We liked him a lot. Academics are first and foremost, with a few kids managing to be science/pre-med while playing ball. Players do get a good education--Coach Smith demands that his players be STUDENT athletes. Ball facilities are good, but not as good as some of the others in the conference, IMO.
At one time Furman was affiliated with the Baptist Church, but no longer is and hasn't been for several years. Still, it has a fairly conservative tone to it, and is culturally a very southern school (in the best way.) We know several kids who are there now, and some who have graduated, and everyone seems to really like it a lot.
They do a lot of recruiting in the south, but also in the north. Maybe not as much, but they are not exclusively focused on southern talent.
