game ending hit

Single. You see it all the time. Outfield pulled way in to cut off the run to the plate, ball gets crushed over their head. Single. Game over.

Unless it's over the fence, it's a single.

I have seen it scored as a single or a double. Given that the runner advanced two bases, it's reasonable to credit the batter with two bases, also. But if the batter actually pulls up at first and doesn't run to second, you couldn't give him the double.

Had the runner been on third, though, it'd be a single no matter how far the batter could have gotten.

Midlo has it correct -- and OBR is pretty explicit on this one.

"GAME ENDING HITS ... when the batter ends a game with a safe hit which drives in as many runs as are necessary to put his team in the lead, he shall be credited with only as many bases on his hit as are advanced by the runner who scores the winning run,and then only if the batter runs out his hit for as many bases as are advanced by the runner who scores the winning run."

So here it's a double if the batter runs all the way to 2nd, a single if he stops at first.

But how about this scenario:
- tie game
- bottom of the last
- runner on 3rd
- batter drives one to the outfield which bounces over the fence. Does he get credit for the ground-rule double, or does it get scored as a single?

If the batter only got to first, I would score it as a single.
