I commented at the beginning of the baseball season that I thought it would be harder to get out of the Southeastern District than to go beyond. That is the 3rd time in the past 9 years that the Southeastern District has won the AAA baseball championship.
I thought this one would be much higher scoring. Mr. Perez did the bulk of the damage for SC and outside of him the GB pitching kept them off balance all day with only a handful of hard hit balls.
GB got a much more balanced attack and that was the difference between the two today. It sure would have been interesting to see them go 2 out of 3.
Job well done for Coach Lee! He took a group of teenagers and made them a very good team! Not easy to do with any kids! Good to hear that the Mr. Perez did so well. Looking forward to that!
I also expected that the contest would be much higher scoring than it was, given the potent offenses both teams have, plus the pitching that was available, especially for SC. That said, Josephs (who was an "emergency starter" due to Frazier's injury) did a great job and once he settled in, he kept GB batters off-balance. The GB pitchers threw a great game and the starter Connor Jones, a sophomore, looks to have a great career ahead of him if yesterday's game is any indication.
Further, I expected to see a lot more home runs by both teams, given that they were playing on what one person on this site referred to as a "little league field," and that the wind was blowing sharply out to left for much of the game. Just goes to prove the old adage that good pitching will defeat good hitting almost every time.
There is little doubt in my mind that those two teams were the best in the state and each represented their region very well.
As it was, GB was the better team yesterday, and definitely deserved the win and the State championship -- congrats to those boys and their coach.
while I agree that the physical dimensions of the Westfield diamond are smaller than many high schools, it's not that small. Visually, it seems smaller than it is because of the high, close fence in center.
The lack of space in foul territory eliminates virtually all foul ball outs that would occur in other games.
Many many games played here, even among the highest quality teams, are not high scoring.
So the blueprint on defeating South County was finally revealed on Championship Saturday. Jones did a masterful job of 'pitching'.
First and foremost, he kept the hitters off balance. His off speed pitches were effective, and he appeared to change speeds on his fastball as well. It was hard to see from my vantage point, but his ball must have had some sinking action as hitter after hitter drove the ball into the ground. By my count, only three balls were squared up well. Two hit by Perez and one by Carrington.
Second, Jones for the most part worked down in the zone, and complementing that was an umpire who was giving the low strike at the knees, which isn't always the case. If Jones was forced to work around the belt, it would likely have been an entirely different game. Jones also worked ahead. Every time I looked on the scoreboard, it was 0-1 or 0-2.
Josephs did an admirable job of keeping his team in the game and seemed to gain strength and confidence as the game went on. I'm not sure that a healthy Frazier would have changed the outcome, but, we will never know. A best-of-3 is an interesting thought, although I prefer the drama of the one game, winner take all format we have. Anything can happen...
Congrats to the Great Bridge squad and their coaching staff.
Rollapair; By my scorebook, 13 of the 16 outs Connor Jones got were by groundout or K. The other 3 were a line-out to second, a line-out to left and a runner thrown out at the plate.
That's a good pitching job in a small park to keep the ball down and get that many groundouts. (When Cooper Jones came in, there was more of the same. 4 of his 5 outs were ground outs or strikeouts).
Clearly South County had a tremendous year and needs to be congratulated on their accomplishments, but they ran into a hot pitcher who I believe prior to beating South Count, beat Western Branch, Nansemond River, and Lake Braddock.
As for Josephs, he was able to get through the first few innings without giving up a big inning, and then after the rain delay, he looked even better, however the SC offense just couldn't get the runs back.
