Amen.

While I despise the Yankees, The Boss had a real passion for his team, its fans, and the game of baseball, and you really had to always respect that. I kind of enjoyed it more when he played musical managers and the Yankees were down for a few years, but the guy's heart and soul were with that team, and that was something to be greatly admired.

Tough week for the Yankees, Bob Sheppard and the Boss in the same week.
Whoever does his eulogy should fire Billy Martin just for old times sake. I did respect his business vision and "investment" in his teams. He alway did things in a big way, and never backed off from paying top dollar and expecting top performance.

For whatever reason, I will always will remember his character in the Seinfeld TV show....."Costanza, get me a calzone" is forever etched in my memory.

He had a philanthropic heart. A number of the baseball fields in the Ocala area where he maintained a horse farm, owe their field lights to him. I am sure he was as generous in the Tampa area as well, but am only aware firsthand of my town.

He has excellent timing in a way, if you are going to go soon, may as well go when there is no Estate Tax.
In addition to floridafan's philanthropic note about Steinbrenner, this article appeared in our paper this AM. URL below.

It is about Steninbrenner calling Virginia Tech President after campus shooting and donating $1M to VT Baseball team who he had no ties to. An interesting read, and a very generous man.

If that was doing his best, I wonder how he would talk about Steinbrenner if he was holding nothing back. Maybe he should have chosen not to talk about him at all. Vincent really came across as a jerk.

I heard him on the local station here WFAN and I was thinking the same thing with Fay Vincent.

It is what it is.

Steionbrenner was a lot of things to people. He was charitable on one hand and right out nasty to others.

The one consistent thing with the Boss was he did what he thought he had to do to make the Yankees winners inspite of some of the wacky things he did along the way. He understood the brand name and the significance of the New York Yankees as a brand name in sport. Before Steinbrenner, CBS ran the Yankees into the ground and Steinbrenner built that back.
Steinbrenner was about winning. When he took over the team Yankee Pride was becoming a thing of the past. Players like Horace Clarke and Andy Kosco were becoming the poster boys for the Yankees. Fritz Peterson and Mike Kekich made the team a joke.

Sure I enjoy it when the Yankees fall on their faces. But it would have been awful to have the franchise fade into oblivion as it was headed in the 70's. Steinbrenner put the pride back in the Yankees. Was he bold, brash and obnoxious at times? Sure. But I'm a Celtics fan and what we liked about Red Auerbach was he was all about winning and got it done. With the current management team in Boston the Red Sox - Yankee rivalry has never been healthier.
Actually, I'm all for letting the franchise fade and fall flat on it's pennant purchasing face. Let all the teams be allowed and able to spend the same amount on player salaries, and THEN if the Yankees are successful, I'll acknowledge their greatness, but until then in my book they're simply buying pennants at auction.

It is nice the Boss had a philanthropic heart and his donation and kindness to my beloved Hokies was indeed a very wonderful thing. It made me a grudging Yankee fan for one day...well sort of anyway. There's good in almost everyone if we look for it.
