O.K., I don't want to be harsh. But I have to say it occurs to me that George Steinbrenner and Al Davis have a lot in common.

Back in the glory days of the Oakland Raiders, Davis was similarly demanding.. "Just win baby!".. firing coaches and moving teams around, and all his demands have simply been counter-productive. It is eery to watch a Raider game, to see them down 38-7 and the camera pans over to Al who sits there in stone cold silence. No emotion. Another loss.

Certainly Steinbrenner has the right to expect excellence, but he should learn that money and job threats are probably not the way to go. Leadership should inspire, not tire.

Let's understand a few things: I do not approve of the way that George treats people that work for him.
George pays his employees very well (probably better than any team) but he expects nothing but championships. George bought and paid for the team and therefore has the right to operate the team as he wishes so long as he does not break any MLB or employeement laws.

Purchase the team from "KING GEORGE/THE BOSS" and run the team as you see fit!

he has nearly unlimited resources, and failed to achieve HIS goal - so what's your point?

did HE hire the wrong people??

did HE acquire the wrong players??

or did HE have all the RIGHT PERSONELL but should'a paid them more $$??

or were all the pieces in place, but HE couldn't figure out how purchase "chemistry"?

As a Yankees fan, I may not agree with the tactics he's used over the years. However, one of the things I admire about Steinbrenner is his passion for the team and desire to be successful. He's done pretty darn well over the past 20 years building the "Empire" back up both on and off the field. If I was a fan of another team, I'd prefer to have an owner that was committed to winning versus having an owner who pockets the proceeds. Given the revenue the YES network, merchandising, ticket sales, etc brings in, he could very easily pocket the money and put a team out there with a $70M - $100M payroll and have a huge bank account. Instead, he's committed to the fans and winning. Maybe I'm naive but that's how I see it.
Beezer, I just don't quite look at Steinbrenner the same as you. Something more along the lines of a spoiled rich kid comes to mind. I mean how could you possibly treat someone like Joe Torre the way Steinbrenner has this past week? As Cal Ripken pointed out on TV last night, Joe probably did a better job managing this year than in any year past when they overcame such a huge deficit and made the playoffs.
I for one love the Yankees, Joe Torre and I have the greatest respect for George Steinbrenner. I agree with Beezer. He tries very hard to get the talent that he feels would help the ballclub. But, I also agree that this is no way to treat Joe Torre. He has been with the ballclub for 12 years and the past 12 years they have made it to the post season. Granted they have not won a championship for 7 years, but you cannot buy hardware.

I personally believe they would have done worse this year if someone else would have been at the helm. JMO

I agree and like I said above, I don't agree with 100% of the things he does. Look back a few years at his relationship with Billy Martin...it was total chaos. But that's the way he is. We all have our flaws.

Please post my entire quote in the future and not just the portion that makes a case for your opinion. The first thing that I said in the former post was: I do not approve of the way that George treats people that work for him.

With that being said I am of the opinion that father time has taken over and the Yankees are too old. You need a mixture of youth and vetrans in the clubhouse.

I also feel that when George fired his son-n-law (which he deserved to be fired) things started to spin out of control. It took both the GM & the son-n-law to keep George from screwing the team up. One man cannot do this alone.

But I (nor many others) don't have the funds to purchase the Yankees so "THE BOSS" can & will continue to operate the team as he sees fit.
