Georgetown Baseball

Great campus and surrounding area. They play at Shirley Povich Field about 10 miles away. The field is top-notch. As far as the program, they've struggled. I think they went 23-33 last year, however, you'll need to double check. I don't know how well their recruiting efforts are. The head coach, Pete Wilks, knows baseball and has a solid resume. The school is tops academically and very selective.

Saw them play a lot last year and watched a practice this fall and I can say that they are a very talented team.

Great school with a wonderful academic reputation.
If you can get into Georgetown then there are other similar schools you should investigate also. William & Mary, Elon, Richmond, Vanderbilt, Northeastern, and the Ivy league schools all have similar academic standings and better baseball traditions than Georgetown.

Agree with VADad, Georgetown BB won't compare with any schools he listed but Vandy is a huge step up in class (right now) so unless they've called you they might be tough. Not sure about Northeatern. Richmond is about double the tuition at W&M or Elon. I think G-Town closer to Richmond cost than to others.

My understanding is that Georgetown has fully funded its scholarships and that this is a fairly recent development, so they are making an effort to move up in the ranks.

I say them play against my son's team last season. It is apparent academics come first, baseball second. Same is true for my son's school, also catholic, however they are making an effort to improve the baseball program now that they have dropped football.

I am curious to what extent you think that funding of scholarships will make a difference in a place like Georgetown or other like kind schools -- be they Catholic or not.

Northern schools do not have the reputations that southern schools do, although UVA, as an example, certainly has risen into the upper echelon of D1 school/teams.

Do scholarships make that much of a difference in the talent pool and the ability to compete at the higher levels of D1 baseball.

I did get a chuckle out of reading you suggest that Charlottesville and D.C. are in the north!

I guess from Miami, just about everyone else looks like they're up north!

We do tend to look at things upside down from here. Just trying to remember where that Mason Dixon line runs. . .

Scholarships don't increase the talent pool but they increase your chance of getting more of the available talent. All things being equal which is sometimes the case when choosing a school, the school that will present the lower bill or the greater value will likely get the player.

In fairness to SF Sam, I should add that most of Charlottesville thinks it's a cozy New England town, or wishes it were.

Program became fully funded starting with class of 2010. New AD Muir is a big influence on building the baseball program. Excellent coaching staff. Program is definately on the way up!

Placing UVa in the upper echelon of college baseball is a bit of a reach at this particular time.Let 'em at least make their first ever super regional before placing them with Texas, SC, UNC etc

Wilks was at the Headfirst showcase in Sacramento, and told the group there that he had 9 scholarships, up from zero last year. My son really liked him; they chatted at length after one of his games. It would be one of my son's top choices if they maintain their interest in him.
