I was actually scared when I wasn't nervous. I knew something was wrong!

It is completely natural. You just have to find what works for you and calms you down.

For me it helped if I just sat there (after sufficient warm-ups of course). It helped me get my mind right and bring my heart rate down.

Try different things to see what works for you.
Ditto all the other comments, I played several sports and invariably had a good case of butterflys before every game. Perfectly natural, it's the body pumping adrenaline in anticipation of the 'battle'. Once the game started the butterflys always went away. What I liked to do was listen to music, do some wind sprints, then sit and visualize some important aspects of the game in my head. Like Jon said, I'd be concerned if you didn't get nervous beforehand.
