My son is a sophomore RHP at a warm-weather JC with plenty of exposure to scouts and DI coaches. He had a good freshman season (a 2.8 ERA) and is hoping for a breakout spring. We were advised by one of his mentors that even though he is getting some promotional help from his JC coaches, and had his share of scouts following him last year, we should also take the bull by the horns and do some promotion of our own. Suggestions included sending information to Baseball America about his stats, encouraging him to write letters to major league scouts expressing his interest in being drafted, etc. In the opinion of esteemed HSBBW readers, including those who perhaps are scouts and DI coaches, is this effective or seen as grandstanding? Any suggestions for going about this the right way are much appreciated!

A few pointers: for one thing your son was draft eligible in HS and first year of JUCO and was bypassed in the draft? Why? Has he been to any pro tryout camps?

How fast does he throw on the stalker gun? His Size?

Right now you should be worried about getting him into a 4 year college. Is there a JUCO showcase in your area?

As you said MLB scouts saw him last year, well if he is any good they will be following him now.

MLB scouts and Baseball America get flooded all the time with people claiming their kids are prospects, 99% are not, that is just reality.

I agree with FM.

Essentially, the object for a JUCO player should be to find a 4 year college to play for, not depend on being drafted. That would entail beginning the recruiting process all over again.

First place to consider are any 4 year schools that have players from son's JUCO feed into that program.

If he wants to go pro, you need to attend tryouts.

As far as MLB, Frank is correct if he is good the scouts who saw him play last year will be watching him.

He doesn't need an advisor.
Thanks for the comments. He is interested in both entering the draft and going to college -- just depends on what opportunities come up for him. He is 6'7" and throws in high 80s to 90. He had scouts watching him in H.S., but the interest tapered off when he broke his clavicle (non-baseball-related) just before baseball season started his senior year (he missed most of the spring, but it didn't affect his performance after the break healed). As for being drafted after his freshman year in JUCO, our college coaches have been talking to the scouts who have been following him, and said the scouts' opinions were that he could use another year of development.
Wastate,
Not understanding scouts saying he needs another year of development, that's why they draft players to develop them. Take the suggestion and look for a 4 year program.

Anyway, start the 4 year search now, and whatever happens pro wise is just icing on the cake for consideration. Smile

Let us know if you need suggestions. Smile

If he is being looked at highly by one MLB club, I would think most would be on him. I would also think the advisors would be on him, as well as, word gets out pretty quickly.

It sounds like your son is not playing in Washington, is he playing in an area being scouted by the schools he is interested in. If not, as noted by others, I would coordinate with the JC coach but take it in your own hands and pro-actively contacting the schools he is interested in. Let them know he is interest in them, they may not know about him, that is not bragging, just informing.

In our area, I heard there was a big JC schowcase that a lot of scouts and college coaches attended looking for transfers. With the new college rules, an effective pitchers will be even more worth their weight in gold.

Don't want to hijack this thread but it seems to me that there are some really valuable follow up questions for those who have been through the JC to 4 year process...questions that pertain to this siuation as well...

So we are advocating player to 4 year initial contact...

Is it common for Players to do their own marketing/informing project? More common for coaches to market their players? Depends? both?

Are 4 year coaches generally open to such communication, or would they much rather do their own research...contact JC coaches looking for specific reccomendations and needs?

Good idea to clear all marketing/informaing with JC coach first?

Is this marketing/informing to be pretty much the sasme process as those out of HS? Different? In what way?

Calls, Email, Letter, video...all four or choice?

With recruting getting earlier and earlier at the HS level...when should a player being this process...frosh fall? Frosh spring?...Summer? Soph Fall?

Cool 44
