just looking for ideas from other high school coaches on community sevice projects. we do a few but this is one area of our program id like to emphasis and strengthen even more. most of our kids are involved in the student council, key club, fca, etc. - we really push that - but id like to do more in the community as a team. we always do something around christmas time but would like to make it a more year round thing.
any ideas and things you do would be appreciated. thanks - steve

My son's team is involved year-round with a local accociation to help mentally challenged children. Once a week either after school or on a saturday during off-season they go to the groups facility and read to the kids and play with them for a couple of hours. They also have holiday parties and special events for these kids. During Christmas they visit the local childrens hospital and give out gifts dressed like elves. The biys seem to really enjoy the interactions.
We did something this year that was great. We had a free baseball camp for all the kids in the area. Our players worked the camp along with the HS coaches. We played games and gave out prizes to kids for hustle etc. Also we sponsered a need needy family and gave them a Thanksgiving dinner. All the kids brought can foods and we all pitched in to buy a turkey and a ham. Just some thoughts. We held the camp for a week from 5-8pm during the summer so the parents could bring them and pick them up. Our players had a ball working with the kids. We had it for 6 year olds to 13 year olds. I think its great that you want to do this. TR had a great idea about having them work with the local LL. We visited the Ronald McDonald House last year and it was very moving. Good Luck
