Hi Larry, I have 2 daughters that play softball, they are 12 and 13. I saw your other post and meant to reply. They love all aspects of softball. Playing, practicing, their team, game days, etc. I have a 22 year old son that played baseball up through junior college. Softball is a different game. It's about many things that baseball wasn't, and maybe it's just the difference between boys and girls. We don't know. We are just along for the ride. And to bring snacks on our predetermined days. Playing softball adds so much to their lives and increases their positive feelings about themselves. The league we play in is not A ball. It is not a travel team that plays tournaments all over. It's a plus all the way around.

About the mitt - my girls have favored the smaller ones. I think a 12.5 for a 9 year old is probably too much. But it is so personal a choice it is difficult to tell someone what size they should use. They used a 12" until they were about 11 years old, it seems. They are still in a 12.5. Like I said, they prefer the smaller fastpitch gloves, and be sure that a fastpitch glove is different than a bassebll glove. My son was still using an 11.5 glove as a CF as a sophomore in college. Maybe my family just likes small. Big Grin

I did learn some lessons about equipment - that expensive gets lost just as easily as cheap. And they don't care if it is a "good" glove, just so that it closes easily so they can catch the ball. They liked soft every time over stiff. (I'm not going to say anything else about that one)

I'm kind of happy to get back into the game schedule with the girls, and I did not think that I would - I somehow thought I was done after the baseball. I like it a lot.
I agree with YourBasicMom........

Young kids, boys and girls, should begin by using smaller gloves. My daughter used my son's infield gloves when she was younger even though people were telling her she should use a bigger glove for softball. She is now one of the better defensive players as a HS player, and she uses a glove that is 12'.

My experience in working with young kids as well as observing them is that as youngsters they learn to catch more fundamentally correct if they use smaller gloves. Using a glove that is bigger tends to 'enable' them to develop bad habits such as catching one-handed.

I understand that there are parents who would like to get a glove that their kid can grow into, but I do not like that idea at all.

Can your DD control the glove? If not, get the 12. My DD has a 12.75 Nokona. Not the typical Nokona glove but one that is pre broken in and is as soft as a baby's butt. She received that glove at the age of 11. At first, it was too big. Now, it is perfect for what she does. She wouldn't trade that glove for any other glove. BTW, several of her teammates use the Akadema glove.
